1)I'll put you some links in the sources, rather than just retyping what's written there. But, apparently, there is a large risk to the remaining twin of dying, too, as well as birth defects if the dead baby is not completely absorpbed by the remaining twin.
2)when a woman has a miscarriage, what happens largely depends upon how far along the pregnancy was, though a miscarriage is much less likely after the first trimester. This is why lots of couple wait to tell everyone until they're past the 12 week mark. Usually a D&C (see sources) is required to make sure that nothing of the baby or placenta is left in the uterus. If anything is left over, the woman could get a massive infection and even die.

I don't know about the twins, but if you have a miscarriage it depends on the extent of your bleeding and how far along you were. If you weren't that far along, then they may just send you home if they determine that the bleeding isn't that threatening. It can be very painful, but sometimes the baby might not be expelled for a long time and they may suggest doing a D &C, Dilatation and Curretage.
Waiting to miscarry is a horrible emotional experience to go through. You will know that your baby is still in your womb but that there's no hope for a birth. It can be hours or weeks after you get the bad news before you start to bleed. There's no way to know. In the meantime, you find yourself having to wait out time that you should have been joyously thinking of your baby's development...waiting to "pass" your baby instead. So they will take the baby out, kind of like an abortion, but the baby has already died.

i am not sure but i think depending how far advanced they are when one dies they would leave it there till the other oone is born./
i think that the amniotic fluid is an antibacterial fluid also and i think that even if one baby dies it doesn't rot as such but is kindof preserved till the birth. don't know for sure though

if you have a miscarriage or abortion they give you a curette at the hospital which is where they insert an instrument in to the uterus throught the cervix and scrape away the lining so nothing is left behind to cause serious infection.
