Several things may help. Watch his sugar intake. He may be overly active from too much. Also, be sure he gets plenty of exercise and fresh air outdoors. That way he will be physically exhausted at the end of the day, which will enable him to sleep. Then give him a warm bath, read a short book, and say goodnight. Sometimes playing rhythmic music will help, too. (Raindrops, ocean waves, stuff like that.) If he won't stay in his bed, try letting him lay on the couch in the living room, with the TV turned on, but sound off, and have it on a really boring program.

I read all 20 answers.I have a 2 year old too and same problem.I am a well educated mother, very firm and routine. But what ever I tried it does not work.warm baths, milk, stories everything. She is not hyper-active.
All children are different from one another. Before I was obssesed with this sleeping thing but nothing changed. Now I leave it to her.I think that this is a habit for the time being. I am hoping that this period will change in the future months. So let him be.Sometimes putting pressure on them rises their obstinacy .

Don't give him sleeping medicine. If he's running around normally and eating well, it's probably just a condition where his Inner Self doesn't know how to 'turn off' the 'alert mode' switch in his Brain ( the Hypothalamic region ), which then results in a deficiency of what can be called the 'sleep hormone-like substances'.
Relaxing herbs can be given in the form of mild teas, though.
Exposure to heavy / loud / highly stimulating music is a no-no for him, ofcourse..... this pattern is sometimes seen in children who turn out to be hyper-active in later life. So it's best to take precautions from now, esp. about loud noises and over-active sports.

HE STAYS UP ALL DAY BECAUSE HE GOES TO BED LATE AT NIGHT. PUT HIM ON A SCHEDULE. I HAVE A TWO YEAR OLD TOO AND I PUT HER DOWN FOR A NAP AT 12:30-3.AND PUT HER TO BED BY 8:45. NO LATER THAN 9:15. GIVE HIM A BATH AND WARM MILK. IT WILL TAKE A FEW DAYS TO ONE WEEK GUARANTEED.GOOD LUCK!

Just bear with the child. Show extreme patience and care to this life you created. This will soon pass all to quickly. If you are truly concerned for his health ( not your own well being), consult the child's pediatrician. When a person chooses to become a parent the thought of getting a restful nights sleep is a distant memory. It goes with the package of being a parent; sacrifice.

Cut out all sugar & caffine in your childs diet.. they probably will kick up a fuss but you will notice a change in behaviour in a few days.. only let you toddler eat fruit & vege's low fat meat & drink water and milk.. (this will stop your child eating unnessessary sugars and hopefully this will make your child fall asleep at a reasonable hour) also put your toddler to bed at 7.30 at night and don't let them out of bed after.. they will soon get bored and go to sleep also!!

Probably you should stay by his side when he goes to sleep
because i know some things
two year olds are hyper they dont understand the meaning of sleep
its in there nature they are young give them space you try to understand how you felt when you were a babie it always helps
because understanding a two year old is fun

Try to make sure to keep him on somewhat of a routine... meal times, bath time, so on. Then decide on a bedtime and from that point on work on nothing but trying to get him to settle down. Also try to make sure to keep him busy during the day.. I have five children all my boys are VERY active kids but I find it is easier for them to go to sleep at night if they get to burn off most of their energy before lying down. For example.. My two year old has one of those little tykes basketball hoops and one of his favorite activities is to play b-ball. do that for a while shortly before bedtime and it works like a charm.

Push him to take naps. Since he is overtired, he is unable to sleep even in late in the night. Whatever time you want him to sleep in the night, make the house pin drop quite and boring for him. It worked with my kids.
