Theologians
John Bowden (once manager of the Student Christian Movement Press) said in 1993, "[There] are virtually no new substantial and intellectually attractive statements of traditional Christian belief which counter successfully the now well-established criticisms of it."

Richard Holloway(British former churchman) wrote in 2000, “God no longer seems to provide the kind of cohesion we need, because the systems that claimed divine authorization made some claims that we have subsequently repudiated for good reason."

I would have to say the thoery of two Christians isnt enough to base an assumption. I could find quotes from 30 different and more known Christian leaders presenting the opposite to your argument. I know we live in an age where everyone is an expert, but I would advise you look harder than the rambling of two no-names. But you are accountable for you own conclusion. Plus I would replace the word God in the second quote with the word church. We cant blame God for the failure of His people to be obedient. I hope this is the kind of anwer your looking for. If not contact me.

Every thousand years or so, religion is required to re-invent itself to fit in with the changed world it now occupies. The change is resisted by conservative religionists who fear that a change in their particular set of beliefs will result in some sort of disaster. The new religion generally sets forth the more benign aspects of the godhead, such as love for one's fellow creatures, and eventually begins attracting followers. Eventually, political leaders notice that the new religion has a growing number of supporters who would be very helpful in the political arena. Constantine is one example, another might be King Josiah of the 7th Century BCE. The political leaders empower the leaders of the relgion, corrupting them with power and wealth until the religion becomes just another arm of coercive kleptocracy. Then the process must begin all over.

Both Holloway and Bowden are mistaken.

I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).

For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm

Cordially,
John

This seems to be the question of this millenia.
Lloyd Geering is new to me... but from my own researching of the web, I'd say that anything new is going to be a hard sell. Seems as though many are falling back on much older belief systems ie Shamanism, Wicca, Paganism etc.

Appears you are guided, by what this John Bowden, and Richard Holloway, says. You need to go ask them this question. Your not going too accept any ones answer regardless what they say.

Good Luck.

True, the bible is a series of stories, loosely based on historical facts, as seen through the imaginations of a number of men who new nothing of science, or modern medicine.

I agree. Gods were created by men to explain things we didn't understand. Now that we understand quite a bit more, and will understand even more everyday, we don't need them anymore.
