This is the first time ever attempting. I would like to find the easiest and simplest version to install. Perferrably a free one too. Can anyone advise?

Fedora Core 5 is pretty near dirt simple to install. That'd be my recommendation.

I know a bunch of guys who run SuSE servers in the business world, and they say it's really good and very stable, but you asked for easy and simple.

I've never used BSD, but as I understand it, if you want practically perfect security, you want BSD. I've never heard it described as 'easy' or 'simple', though.

Good luck!

If you can get it to run on your hardware, some version of BSD is probably a good bet. It's not Linux, but it's in the UNIX family of operating systems. I've heard that it is more secure than Fedora, because the development is more strictly regulated and carefully planned. Fedora is basically the Beta release program for Red Hat, it seems. I've been wanting to give desktop BSD a try, but they do not yet fully support my video card. I also want to try running a server of my own, but I do not have a static IP address or a spare computer to do it with, nor do I have a need to host so much stuff as to merit running a dedicated server. One of these days I'll give it a try, I guess. Good luck!

Fedora Core 5 at http://fedora.redhat.com.
Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.org.

The first is very closely related to RedHat which everybody in the Linux
world knows.

Ubuntu is INCREDIBLY simple to install, but is based on Debian which
isn't used commercially (because there is no company behind it) so it
isn't as well known.

There are lots of others. Lots. But that's where I'd start.
