there is no real way to know if your child is ready, you have to just start after 2 years of age... and don't expect it to work from the beginning, there must be a lot of patience and positivity. Try to reward your child for every time he use the putty. Its going to take some time.

Actually, studies show that a child is more ready for training around age 3. A female will usually be ready sooner than a male. Studies also show that the later a child is trained, the faster he will be fully trained, and the less stressful on all family members.

Your child should be showing the following signs:
understand simple instructions
be able to communicate when he needs to go
understand the concept of poo and pee
be able to pull his pants down by himself
have dry diapers for at least 1-2 hours
be able to sit on the toilet or potty for a few minutes

You should wait for your child to show all signs of readiness before you begin the process. If you start too early, he may resist your efforts and make the whole process harder, longer and less effective. Make sure that there are no major tensions in the home (new baby, new school, new home) so that the child does not associate the process with anxiety.

You can also read more about it on various sites: parenting.com and askdrsears.com. there are also a lot of sueful books out there to help, but be careful of books which garantee results within specified amounts of time - they do not take your child and family's personality and dynamics into account.

best of luck! We've all been there and were successful!

bill y, I had a very hard time potty training my son. I bought several potties, books, threatened him, made him sit on the potty for minutes with me in there too, took his toys from him and nothing worked. I then took him to the doctor and they wanted to do a lower GI when I said nope...see ya.... He was fixing to go into kindergarten when I sat down and told him he would be the only kid wearing a diaper and the kids would make fun of him and he went to the potty on his own...I don't know what the problem was...They say to start them at 2 years old...good luck....

you will know when your child is ready when your child starts telling when he or she tells you when they used the bathroom on their self, or when they can comprehend the question "Do you need to use the bathroom?" usually when they around other kids of the same sex, as in daycare settings or such, they will tend to imitate what other kids are doin and want to do the same. Keeping your child on a regular schedule to be put on the potty, helps too.

He or she will start telling you that they need changed. Its when they know that a wet or dirty diaper is uncomfortable that they are ready. If your child is 2 when this starts it would probably be easier on the both of you if you wait until they turn 3. Hope this helps.

when they show they don't like being wet or dirty by taking off their diapers or whining. when they show an intrest in the potty usually around 2 and my son was easier than my daughter by a long shot. good luck and just stay constant when you start they have good and bad days you just have to stay with it don't go back and forth.

We used liquid dish soap in the toilet for a training aide.
It seemed that our boy's enjoyed making the bubbles.
