Terriers are extremely territorial and jealous, esp. if they have always been the "baby." We have a manchester terrier, and she has fits when any of our friends bring their dogs over. And, trust me, your terrier probably won't get over it.

I have neighbors that had a similar problem with their pug when they bought a german shepherd puppy. They had to sell the pup, and got a new pug instead which their old dog is fine with.

If your new pup is considerably bigger your rat terrier may be frightened and your best bet may be to get a smaller dog instead.

If that isn't an option you could either keep them seperate at first with a divider they can see through and let them get used to seeing and smelling each other. Then slowly let them spend more and more time together. This will allow the older dog to overcome her fear.

It sounds like the older dog is jealous and may be scared that the puppy will replace her as your favorite. Give her plenty of attention and affection, and she should calm down.
