It will actually depend on the department, some departments have the officer place thier weapons in lockers and leave them at the department and carry thier own personal weapons home.

But the majority of departments not only allow them to carry them home but also ask that the officer carries a weaon at all times.

Yup. My dad was a cop for 30 years and brought his gun home every night. Growing up, I never knew that none the less knew where he hid it.

Some do and some don't. I had permission to carry my personal weapon. So I always had my weapon on me.
