That the lives we live, here and now are not all there is to our existence? That the earth really is a school, and our purpose here is to better our spiritual selves? That heaven, whether you perceive it to be full of fluffy white clouds and angels, or reunion with long-passed loved ones, or God, is not full of people whom disparage each other because of religion, creed, race, or sexual preference? That reincarnation is real ("energy and matter are never destroyed, they merely change form"), and the only salvation for humankind? That the real lesson of Jesus's life and death was his achievement of the Christ Consciousness, and his triumph over the bonds of materiality and crass physical life ("rising from the dead")? That karma ("for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction") is neither good, nor bad, it just "is"? That if your life is going badly now, you and only you are to blame, and only you can fix it? That we won't be able to leave here until we undertand?

How come we don't understand that the things we despise most in other people are the things we secretly hate most about ourselves?

The difference between spirituality & religion is the same difference between experience & blind faith.
There really are more things in heaven & earth than are dreamed of in our philosophies, so, yes; I readily concede that the universe is larger than our capacity to fully understand it.
For those who don’t believe in anything, & demand proof of belief, I submit to you, prove that any of the things you disbelieve DO NOT exist.

Religion, like all human institutions, is prone to corruption over time, & practice. Rather, one should try to cleave more to spirituality, & less to organized religion, as one is based on visceral personal experience, while the other is subject to the subjection, interpretation, & will of others, whom may or may not have the practitioner’s best interest at heart. As such, I practice spirituality & spiritual evolution, not religion, nor do I expound any particular religion over the other.
Amaara, what I have experienced, as opposed to what you think I believe, more than likely, falls within the realm of “more things in heaven & earth…” than are dreamed of in YOUR philosophies…
