Most Latex Flat Paints are self-priming and the application simply then consists of 2 coats of the finish product.
"Self-Sealing Paint", Is generally, Higher Quality, with a film density that prevents excessive penetration; this permits use over most surfaces without a primer. These paints serve as their own primer when a second coat is required.

Note: I myself, Prefer To Always Use A Primer, when Painting.

2 coats of good finish paint. works better than primer because primer is so thin to begin with. Trust me on this one we've been doing it for 30 yrs with no complaints or call backs And you always want 2 coats of finish anyway for the durability. so as for saving paint yes you will . you use 2 coats instead of 3. and i would much rather have 2 finish than 1 primer and 1 finish

I always use Bher New Drywall Primer and Sealer. You get it at Home Depot. It makes a difference, you will use less paint once the drywall is sealed since your paint won't soak in as much, you also can get away with less coats of the finish coat.

Priming will keep you from having to put so many coats of paint on the walls. So it is up to you put on lots of coats of paint or primer and paint.

actually unless you use semi-gloss or oil based paint you don't really need a primer, water based flat and/or satin latex will act as a primer for you - you will however definitely need more than one coat.
several houses later and more drywall painting than i want to remember i have yet to use primer anywhere.
