Then don't join. Really.
Yes, there are jobs where likelihood of combat is lessened, but as you would learn in basic training, that isn't a 100% guarantee. Look up the story of the team of veterinarians who found themselves in a firefight in Panama city. You can get wet even in some of the medical jobs.
The purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. If you're not down with that, then it's not a place for you.

Sorry despite all the other advice you have gotten, if you join the military, you must do so with the thought that at any given time you will be called on to commit the ultimate of duties, protecting your life, your freedom, your country. If you do not feel that you can carry out that duty, then do not chose to join the military, it would be a difficult time for you, especially at this time. You do not get that big of a say in the vocation that the military assigns you. You get to state your preferences, but yours is not the final word in it, and if the branch of military you wish to join discovers that you are unwilling to carry out all of your duties, then you may be discharged.

I'm retired from the military, and I never shot one person. I don't know what the future holds for us (war, etc), but you don't have to be in a field that requires shooting people. Any civilian job you can think of is also in the military. As others have said, go into the religious field, be a journalist, a cook, there is a whole list of jobs to do.

Its been said a bunch of times already, that there are many jobs that don't involve combat, enough said. To those who say that the military can change your job at will are misinformed. You have to sign a contract once you are at MEPS for the job you want. If they try to reassign you, it is a breach of contract and you can opt out. Talk to a recruiter, find a job you like and go for it if you want to. And if you think MP's are not a combat job, think again. I am an MP in Iraq now, we do nothing but combat escorts, its not just riding around and giving out speeding tickets anymore, but as i said, find a job you like and go for it. I love being in the military.

To join any US military branch you have to take the below oath. If you don't think you can do what it says then you shouldn't join.
''I, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.''

You could try to get a job that wouldn't involve killing people, like being a medic for example. But be aware that you don't always get the job the recruiter promised you! And once you're in, you have no say over what they assign you to. I'd stay out of the military if I were you.

One choice would be to become a Conscientious Objector. You'd be assigned non-combat duties.
Another choice would be to learn a skill before joining that the military needs so that you would be unlikely to be placed in combat: medicine, law, cryptography, languages, engineering, etc.
Another choice would be to join the Navy. Not likely to see combat, since the terrorists don't have many ships.
But the only choice that would assure you of avoiding combat would be the Conscientious Objector.

Why would you want to enter an occupation that may require you to kill, regardless of your job, if to do nothing more than save your own life? You are another person that is willing to take everything the military has to offer, without taking any responsibility inherent in the life. Another example of a pathetic American wanting everything for nothing. Nothing comes free.

Not all military actually kill ppl. there are many positions in the military wher you may not be forced to kill, however---- You always need to be prepared should you be needed on the front line. Noone is excluded.
If you ae that concerned, perhaps you shouldt join. I would talk to a recruiter, and see what their response is.
Good Luck with your choice!
