There is absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. Sub bass is omni-directional (meaning it is not "aimed" and isn't terribly inhibited by obstacles inside the car and is not stereo left and right). There are certainly some single subwoofer applications that out-perform dual driver subwoofer installations. And, it's not even necessarily about how big you go, but more about enclosure and driver type.
Almost every home audio surround sound system includes a single subwoofer. It's basically the same principal as in your car. Adding a second will add additional demand in powering the system properly, and will only give you ~3dB additional "loudness".

Rickdoesntknow- there are alot of others out there that are better (alpine is good though dont get me wrong) however yes you can just put one sub, I have one sub and I can out hit alot of dual systems in my town. Its not all about how many subs you have, the most important part of a subwoofer is the box!! With out a good quality box, you will not get the speakers full potental, bass or sound. If you have any speakers and amps in mind, email me and I will let you know what I think. munkyhead2_16@yahoo.com

It will work, but you might eventually want more thump. With 1- 12" sub, you MUST have a good quality one with an appropriate amp. Alpine and Kicker are the only quality subs left. To really enjoy your bass, you'll want to get a sub that can handle at least 400w continuous and a big amp.

Definately. My brother has a 1997 Cavalier and he has only one 12" open sub in the back. It can sure kick. I have no clue what his amp size is, but I'd recommend a power capasitor also. I have dual 12" subs in my Eclipse with a 900w amp and I could make it go more, but I keep it low.

It all depends on your musical demands. You'll probably go though the "not enough bass" phase soon, but it gives you a chance to afford a second or larger sub in the mean time. By the way, isobaric means two subs coupled together to reduce the required airspace by 1/2. Go sealed or ported or even bandpass depending on your sub requirements.

Yes, it will sound fine.
Ricknows- I guess JL Audio, Adire audio, Image Dynamics, MTX, Eclipse, and Rockford are all not quality huh? I would say over half the list are better and the rest are just as good.....

completely matters on the setup. you could ghetto it up with a bunch of wallmart special stuff in an inappropriately sized box, and it would sound horrid, or you could get a nice JL 10w3v2 or similar with a nice amp and well made box and have it sound great.

yea i would probably go with a sealed box but if you want it to be loud look in to buying a rockford fosgate hx2 or a JL10w7...these two produce a lot of bass so it makes it easier to use just one speaker and still get great sound.
