I would train your pit bull to be as calm and gentle as possible. In Denver they are trying to ban all pit bulls because of them being so dangerous if they get pissed.

like humans, some dogs were born to be dominant while others are born to be easy going and some are born to be, well... i don't wanna say weak but,.... overly passive. Its very common actually. There are some factors that play a role in how often and if your dog will bark at a person or bite a sleeve or an intruder. First off, if your dog was overly socialized in its first year of life, they will most likely be a passive dog with minimal aggression regardless of how they were born/bred to be. If your dog has never been socialized, they will grow to be unaccepting to any stranger. Being that he/she is 8 month already, I'll ask, do you have a lot of people pet him/her? Family/friends/neighbors? All this counts as socializing. Many breeds, regardless of how aggressive they may be naturally, will become passive once intorduced to many people adn animals. Thats why some dogs can get along with cats while most dont'. They were socialized with them at a young age so they accept them. One way to test if your dog will bite a sleeve or a person is to grab a leather rag, tie them to a post or wall or something where they will not get loose too easy, wave the rag in front of them and see if they will try and snap or grab teh rag. Also, see if they stay focused on it when other things are going on around it. If he tries for the rag, by jumping towards it and trying his best to get the rag, than he will PROBABLY bite after he is trained to bite with a trainer/helper. If he doesn't go for the rag and get hyped of because of the rag, than the probability is that he will not bite when the time comes. This is not a for sure test but it is one many dog trainers use when seeing if a dog will be good for personal protection or not. Try it out, if he/she won't go for it, well... you'll have to find another type of protector for the home or a companion to the one you have a home now.

My half pit would not bark unless it was ABSOLUTELY necessary, and it was a blessing. Dogs that bark at anything that moves are a nuisance and in some areas can get you fined. Put up a small sign in the door and/or windows that says home is protected by bull terrier. Most people will not take the chance. He will know when to protect the house and when not to. Mine knew if a person was up to no good, they can sense intentions. Also, if you train him to be mean in any way, you take a chance of him biting someone who is NOT a burglar. Not good...

Just continue working with him....see if you can get a friend to walk up the alley and you be with the dog and say listen and make it wonder have the friend make noise and stuff... you have to teach it what you want it to do that is how i got mine to bark when he heard something but now may times it barks at nothing so dont know if this helps or not worth a try

I used to have a dog that wouldn't bark. We ended up getting another dog and it's as if the other dog "taught" her how to bark. Maybe socialize him with other dogs at a dog park or a neighbor's dog or a friend who has a dog? He is still young...maybe he hasn't learned yet?
But trust me...you will regret the day you ever said this when they won't shut up barking at ANYTHING that moves. : )

do you really want your dog to bark at every single person who passes by. that would get annoying. Im sure if a stranger approaches and tries to pass the magic line your pit will rip their balls off so I wouldnt worry
