America never was one country under any god. That part of the plege was only added in the 50s because we were all paranoid about the commies. This country was founded on the principle of people of many differant faiths all being free to worship (or not) as they choose.

The Pledge of Allegiance first appeared September 8, 1892 in THE YOUTH'S COMPANION. It said nothing at all about God. It did say "my flag". In 1924, that was changed to "flag of the United States of America". In 1942, this pledge was recognized by the US government. In 1954, Eisenhower urged Congress to add "under God" to it, supposedly to distinguish us from the "Godless Communists". Since Russia has collapsed, there is no longer that feeble excuse for having the addition. It is contrary to the First Amendment. The Founding Fathers rejected someone's idea of mentioning Jesus in the Declaration of Independence. George Washington didn't want God or Christianity mentioned in the Constitution. Thomas Jefferson didn't want the Bible taught in public schools. John Adams agreed with the Treaty of Tripoli that said, "the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." As you should be able to see, America is not a country under God, and that phrase should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance, because it is unconstitutional. I'll allow you to debate "the true God" with Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, Jainists, Taoists, Shintoists, etc. All have an equal right to believe and worship as they please in the USA.

Lets be honest here for a second. The only nation that God ever promise protection to is Israel so in the very end we know God will keep his promise. But we must also understand all nation including Israel will be judge in the end so Israel is not spared from judgement. Now God doesn't promise anything to any other nation unless they obey his command and serve him. So if the United States or any other nation do God's will then they are protected by God. If they choose to not do God's will then they are doomed for disaster. So we know how the story begins and ends. The truth is that every nation is headed for destruction and America wont be any different. Prophecies are prophecies and the word of God is truth. The old earth and heaven will pass away and will be replace with a new earth and heaven.

First of all, the phrase "under God" was not added to the pledge until the 1950's.

Second, one of the reasons english colonists left England was that they wanted a place where they felt could freely practice their denomination of Christianity (as opposed to Anglicanism or Catholicism).

Third, one of the founding ideologies of this country was a distinction between church and state. In other words, the state could neither promote nor dissuade relgions.

To answer you question, the only time I feel America really wasn't one country was during the Civil War era and everything is under God.

No. There are a lot of people who still believe in the true God and try to have a relationship with Him. However, as a nation in general, America is becoming more secular, humanistic and in some ways, communistic by the day. There are increasingly active and growing numbers of people who are hostile to Christians and Jews in this country. There are groups who are working to get "under God" out of the pledge. In some schools, they have already succeeded in making saying the pledge optional for the kids. More and more businesses, schools and even individuals are being taken to court for having publicly viewable expressions of faith in God. Abortion, which is the killing of innocent people and is forbidden in the Bible, is LEGAL in this country. Groups are fighting to make homosexual marriage which is also forbidden in the Bible legal and have won in a few states. Lying, stealing, using God's name in vain etc. are on the rise. Blaphemous movies (like DaVinci Code), books and "art" get praised by the media. Standards for what is allowed in TV, movies, magazines etc continue to erode. How can America still be considered under God when so many of its citizens won't even obey and honor Him? America resembles Sodom and Gamorrah more all the time.

Ok, first up. The phrase "under god" was added in the 1950's to differentiate us from the "godless commies".

There is no widespread conspiracy to take "under god" out of the pledge. The 2 court cased involved 2 different people, representing themselves. Neither the ACLU, nor Americans United for Separation of Church and State were involved.

America is not and has never been a "christian nation", One quote in particular by John Adams (one of the founding fathers)
"The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.", Adams wrote in the Treaty of Tripoli.

James Madison wrote "Religion and government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together."

And last but not least, Thomas Jefferson,
"I have examined all the known superstitions of the world, and I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned. What has been the effect of this coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites; to support roguery and error all over the earth."

So let's put to rest this revisionist history version of the founding fathers as "good christian men"

Does your question mean that until 1954, this wasn't a nation under "the true God" since that's when that phrase was added to the Pledge?

David - when the Pledge was written, it didn't include the words "under God" at all.

No I don't believe that America is one country under God. Just think about what has happen in this country the past fifth years. Abortions by the millions, no prays in school or at ball games, gay with rights such as they can get married. No capital punishment, etc. God as destroyed countries for a lot less than what going on in this country.

I think we are under God as stated today, but see a falling of our nation when we do kick him out. Our nation was founded on God(The christian God) not Ala and no other. This nation was founded on Christian beliefs but us as a society are slowly kicking out, in my opinion, what this nation was built on. Look at any great nation before that was founded on the christian God and look at what happened when God was not needed anymore, they all fell. It saddens me that we as a nation are convinced by a biased media that we don't need prayer or "God" in the pledge of allegiance or the ten commandments. Its the God fearing bible believing praying everyday for this nation Christian's that are keeping this country afloat, and I hope I'm not around when we all decide we don't need him anymore. We are the country we are because of God!!!
