I've got two full grown cats that sleep on their backs all the time. I have 4, four month old kittens that sleep on their back 95% of the time.

I always heard that cats sleep on their backs when they love and trust their owners. If that is the case, it makes me feel wonderful that so many of my cats love and trust me that much. I used to hear that it was really rare that cats slept on their backs, but not in my household. I love my cats as much as they love me.

If your cat feels safe, it wouldn't worry about protecting it's belly. Plus, cats are relatively light sleepers and usually know when someone is near, though if it's you, they might not react because they feel safe.

Cats also lose body heat through their bellies, so sleeping on their backs helps them cool off.

Though I'm no expert in cat behavior, I would have to say that your cat is quite secure living in your home. Sleeping on their back does leave them in a vulnerable position and if your cat feels safe and comfortable enough to lie in that position, well then, that's a good thing.

It means that your cat feels very safe in his home if he is willing to expose his belly like that.
