I know what you mean, i had the same problem until i
followed some of these tips:
* do not nap during the day
* limit caffeine especially hours before bedtime
* don't smoke--nicotine is a stimulant
* don't exercise before going to bed
* don't eat a large heavy meal before bedtime
Bedtime snacks can help. An amino acid called tryptophan, found in milk, turkey, and peanuts, helps the brain produce serotonin, a chemical that helps you relax. Try drinking warm milk or eat a slice of toast with peanut butter or a bowl of cereal before bedtime.
Sleep in the best position that you feel most comfortable in.

Improve Sleep - Position?
I have simple ways to improve sleep in case I am too awake at night.
Ways to Be Able to Sleep
I use
* Vitamin A in the evening, and/or
* Hypericum Perforatum (very often, starting during the early day or afternoon),
* the Dinshah Color Purple (puts me to sleep every time, it uses a color gel, which shines its color on the skin via a reading lamp),
* or I read something I am interested in.
Positioning the Body
The best position of the body to fall asleep may vary from person to person (lying on the back, the belly or the side), however the orientation for a most relaxing sleep is having the head point North! This way the healing rays of the pole best work on the antenna-like nerves and muscles, which span across the back. We may even feel the pulse deepen and relax at the same time, when our back points exactly North, while standing. This way, we may also determine North, when lost in the woods! It takes however, some training to notice the subtle changes of the pulse. Once noticed, they are very obvious.
Non-Toxic Bedroom
It would also seem logical to have a toxic free bedroom, well ventilated or equipped with an ionizer or air purifier. However, these devices may disintegrate clothes made from Lycra. They are then best kept in metal containers, when these devices are used. Otherwise, incense can purify the air, essential oils, sage etc.
Sleep Before Midnight
It is also essential that we get sleep before midnight, that is, going to bed and sleep latest by 10 PM. The quality of each hour of the 24 hour day is different about every two hours, as the Chinese Organ Clock tells us. The quality of our sleep is not the same at any other hour, in case we miss to sleep before midnight.
Children Grow at Night
Science knows that children mainly grow during sleep at night. Children who stay up till midnight, tend not to grow much. For children and teenagers it is best to go to bed by 8 or 9 latest! They may not like it, but it is good for them!
Wishing you a very good and relaxing night.

go to sleep the same time every night and get up the same time in the morning, a sort of training for your mind. don't eat 2 hours before you go to sleep, relax 1 or 2 hours before bed ,no TV no much stimulante read a book or what every you like to do that is low stress and calm. sometimes there are teas made to help relax you and I heard milk can work to. position really doesn't matter as long as your airway is totally free so your brain and body can get what it needs. some people try to sleep with face in pillow but usually have a hard time sleeping or nightmares because they don't get enough clean air through the night. Also you can check with dr they have medication but you have to be carful with them they have some very unwanted side effect sometimes
