Because of the influence of the spirit that rules this world, it's quite impossible for men to perform the will of God, which is to do only good without doing any evil. Even when a man is aware of this spirit's influence upon his thoughts and actions (though most aren't aware of it), he is not able to defend himself against it. The Law of Moses is a written law and proves to us that we're not able to perform the law or even to understand the law.
Theologians cite 1 John 1:8 attempting to prove their assertion that no one is ever without sin, even after being "born again," yet the very next verse advises that we can be cleansed from all sins. John advises concerning the new birth that no one can truthfully say that he has never sinned, but after one is born of God, he is cleansed of sin and cannot sin. [1 John 3:9] John further tells us, "We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God (the Christ) keeps him and the evil one does not touch him." [1 John 5:18]
When one is fully-grown in the Spirit, that one can do nothing except the will of God because the Holy Spirit is then the cause of every thought and every action. Just as the spirit of disobedience once caused us to do evil, the Spirit of God causes us to do that which is good. So what we ourselves were never able to do, the Spirit of God is able to do for us.
Under the Old Covenant, we were required to obey the Law of God by force of our own will power, attempting to follow a written set of laws whether recorded on stone, clay tablets, or paper.
Then came this announcement concerning a New Covenant: "Behold, days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers...But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,' declares the LORD, 'I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them." [Jeremiah 31:31-34]
For this reason, we can never boast of our own deeds, for the Spirit of God is the One who accomplishes the works through us. In the end, God Himself is the only One who can boast of anything. This is the Grace of God that He will do all these things for us despite the many evils we may have done in the past.

We're SAVED by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Rev. 3:20, John 1:12, John 14:6, Romans 10:9, 1 John 5:11-12). It's all about Jesus.
The Holy Spirit also gives us spiritual gifts so that we may use them for the works of the Kingdom. So see, we're SAVED by grace through faith. The WORKS come out of obedience to our Savior.

Okay, I'm not sure what James 3:9 has to do with your question, but I'll do my best to answer it. By works or law, as it is written in a few scriptures, it means you cannot get to heaven by works alone. You need the grace of God to make the works you do profitable for the kingdom. To be saved by grace you must do things. The Bible also says in James 2:20 that faith without works is dead. This scripture means that you can have faith, strong faith, but if you do absolutely nothing, then what is the point. This means if you pray to God and ask in faith, believing, that you want to pass the history test coming up on Monday, you must also study, so God knows that you are doing your part to pass the test and he can help you retain and recall the knowledge inside you. It is that same thing with your question about grace and works. We are definitely saved by grace, but to be saved we need to do what the Bible says so that we can be under grace. The Bible says in Acts 2:38 that we must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and then we shall receive the gift of the holy ghost. Now, this means to be under God's grace and to be saved by his grace, we must repent and be baptized and then the Bible says we WILL be filled with the holy ghost. In verse 39 it says the promise is unto you and to your children and all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord, our God, shall call. Works alone cannot save you and God does not sit up in heaven with a tally sheet, making sure you do your good deeds of the day so you might possibly make it into heaven. God knows we are human and we make mistakes, but he lays out the plan of salvation so clearly that we cannot mistake it. There is a warning to those who know what to do and do not do it. The Bible says that one who knows to do good and does it not, to him, it is sin. Yes, get saved first and be baptized and then don't worry about it. Your goal after that is to worship and praise God and then witness to those around you who may not know him. Our witnessing is our works.

The doctrine that you can be saved by faith without good works is the most absurd doctrine ever taught and it contradicts the Bible.. Does this mean that you can go and get saved and then go off and start killing people? There is no such thing as having faith without having good works. James 2:18-20, "Yea, a man may say, thou hast faith, and I have works; shew my thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?" I can't say it any clearer than James said it. It would be impossible to be saved through our works alone. Only through Jesus Christ can be saved. But Jesus expects us to do our part. If you don't try to do what Jesus says then you don't really have faith in Jesus.

I believe the answer is both, faith and works.
Consider the following (James 2:17-26)
"Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
We will all be saved from physical death by the grace of God. Jesus overcame death so that all of us can also be resurrected. This is a free gift, for both the righteous and the wicked. He also saved us from spiritual death by atoning for our sins. All have sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). That is why it is impossible to gain salvation on our own, by our works. Just one sin alone is enough to keep us out of Heaven, and no amount of good works can erase it. We must rely on Jesus Christ and apply the Atonement in our lives for it to have an effect. We must believe, repent, and sin no more, and thereby show our faith by our works.
Refer also to Matthew 25:31-46. I won't quote it here because of its length, but essentially it says that those who do good works will be better off than those who lack good works.

By God's grace (unmerited favor) we recieve salvation from our sinful ways. We can't earn the sacrifice of Christ. If we could, He would not have had to die.
Since He did, though, by accepting the Gift we accept an obligation to get up off our blessed assurances and get to work doing good stuff, instead of sin.
Our works don't save us. But if we have no works to show, are we saved? Unless we accept God's grace on our deathbeds...

If anyone really reads the Bible, the message is clear. We are saved by faith. If we could be saved by our works, then Jesus wouldn't have needed to come or die on the cross for our sins. But because it was impossible for man to overcome sin, Jesus came to die once for all, so that anyone who believes in him can have salvation. It is the greatest gift God has given to humanity. And it is free. All you have to do is believe. How simple is that? And yet, people choose not to and take their chances and believe that God doesn't exist. Very sad.

Why do Christians assume that it is either by works or grace through faith that one must be "saved"? Gee, maybe it's not by works at all. Maybe it's not by faith at all. Maybe, just maybe....it's by becoming a good person through and through, so that the works one does are merely reflective of one's good nature.

Re your response to my response re the BOM 'Gospel Fulness', TeePee and the way you speak to others:
It is no wonder that you hide yourself, and do not make personal contact with yourself available on here.
Well, Teepee, I can only conclude re a number of things that you must be of Lamanite descent, but continue to remain in a spirit of rebellion.
Personally, if you are that 'hell-bent' on not joining the LDS Church, I can only consider it a deep reverse-psychological compliment on your part that you have found it necessary to single out the particular comments of kspring and myself in your concerns over the answers given, and have found it needful for your own personal reinforcement [of your own belief] to address our answers - at least, to or for your own satisfaction.

TeePee,
It is by faith we are saved, because a state of Grace is established through Jesus Christ.
The Law is fulfilled by Faith. And by Faith we are citizens of a heavenly kingdom.
No man is justified by works.
