I always place ads that read WILL TAKE IN UNWANTED BIRDS YOU CAN NO LONGER CARE FOR OR KEEP and now let me tell you, I have doves, parakeets, english budgies, and 20 cockatiels and 2 quakers and word has it I'll be getting in another quaker soon.
Birds I had given to me I have rehomed, a pionus parrot, a cockatoo, many cockatiels, love birds, a conure, parakeets, englsih budgies, pigeons.
I'll take in and rehab birds, and I'll keep those I fall in love with and rehome those others fall in love with out of my flock.
Try it in your area on http://craigslist.org and all free ads listings you can do a search on for in your area. Then when called upon to go get them, GO GET THE GRAB BAG you have coming. Most all of these birds will come with cages and supplies these people just want out of their lives!
And to rin_r If you get a bird of this size and it turns on you trying to test you and you cant handle it, thats not the birds fault, its yours for not allowing the bird to be who he is. All birds go threw the hormonal stage just like you little tinny bopping teens. So dont blame the bird on YOUR PROBLEMS because you are not BRAVE enough and you dont love your bird enough to work threw their terrible 2s or 3s. They do have a right to be who they are weather or not you can take dominance over them or not. You are just too inexperienced with this type of bird to know how to love and care for one properly, and thats not the birds fault, its yours.

I don't know the answer for the bird but you answered my question on the dog box.
Iam a breeder too and i want somethling that will last a long time. Something like the bottom of a dog house. Some dog houses come apart in the middle so I may end up doing that. The ones I found on line were to expensive. Over $100 a piece.
So what is an xbox?

Try kijiji or petfinder. Remember that large parrots need 2ce yearly vet checks which can be costly depending on findings. If you don't have the money to buy one or pay for medical bills, why don't you volunteer at a sanctuary or rescue in your area? This might give you a better feel for the $$ involved in parrot ownership. We own 9 lovebirds and a greencheek conure and I can tell you that our avian vet is amazing, but costly. Add in the cost of destroyed toys, food, nontoxic cleaning supplies etc and WOW...what a shocker !
Best of Luck

Cockatoos are intelligent and can be hard to rehabilitate. If you get one which is not a baby, it will probably come with some emotional and behavior issues.
Turn the volume up to max on your PC and then go to mytoos.com (linked below).
Contrary to what other people say, they CAN be inexpensive to entertain (nuts in paper towel rolls and sturdy childrens' toys instead of expensive parrot toys)....
... BUT they ARE emotionally draining. Time consuming. You are committed for life. When I was working and going to school full time, I would turn down social nights out to be with my bird, or bring him along (luckily, my friends thought it was cool). When I got off working with mentally challenged people, I would not want to be around him because, as a cockatoo, it is VERY much like having a retarded child!
They make messes. Even when they aren't doing anything. Messes include chewing up nice things of yours. My 6 year old has probably chewed up atleast 1000 worth of keyboard, shoes, cords, electronics, door mouldings, carpet...
They scream. Loud. I can hear my two goffins from across the street with all the windows closed. Umbrellas are larger and louder.
If, after doing alot of research, getting permission from your landlord, support from your boyfriend/husband, finding a local bird vet... and you STILL want a codependent emotional feathered companion for the rest of YOUR life: Your best bet is to lurk daily on craigslist and your local classifieds for people who are fed up with their birds and selling them cheaper than buying from a petstore would cost. If you choose to buy from a breeder online, you need to watch out for scams and parrot farms.

PLEASE DON'T GET ONE.
THEY HAVE A TERRIBLE TWO TYPE STAGE- people DON'T talk about it, that's why so many 3 year old cockatoos are in shelters, they don't stay cuddly. They want to test you. They can become like teenagers who suddenly hate their parents-which means you.
Please consider a Green Cheek Conure, Linnie, Parrotlet, or the other wonderful over-looked birds.

There are organizations in your State (or area) who rescue birds all the time. People pass away, and if you know the life-span of a parrot, often times they out-live their owners! Also, sometimes natural disasters need volunteers to help with relocating animals (like Katrina). Check this possibility out and good luck!! Please dont buy a bird too cheap,,,, you will regret it...................
