it is supposed to transmit a better picture from your DVD player to your TV if your DVD player has component output and you TV is one of the plasma, LCD, TVs. but in my opinion the picture is not any better at all

component separates video (yellow) from stereo audio (red/white)
for better video signal. best is if you use higher reswolution s-video (connector) if available instead of yellow output

actually i never noticed a difference until i got a large TV .. then there is a noticeable improvement but not drastic by any means.
