If you are taking the proper medications, then the next step is in your diet. It should EXCLUDE purine-rich foods, such as organ meats IE. liver, gizzards etc. When it flares up. try taking an noninflammatory drug such as Motrin, unless you have stomach problems, then these are out of the question. Ask your doctor for pain meds. there are many types and many strengths. Taken properly and only when needed, you won't become addicted. It's up to you. Soak in warm water, keep your feet elevated for a while. Hope this helps

Gout is a condition where uric acid crystals build up in the body.
This can happen in the area of the big toe and cause a lot of pain.
Our foods contain purines; some foods are higher in this than others.
The doctor may place you on a lower purine diet (of which they will usually provide you a list of foods to avoid. There is also medications that can lower the uric acid in the blood
Here an alternative way to cure gout?

many good answers. i have a question for you though....

have you been tested for liver disease? might be a good time regardless if you have any of the "well known" risk factors.

Not to alarm you, but better safe than sorry!

Gout can be a symptom of a viral infection. I have heard that those infected with HBV or HCV have a higher chance for gout.

Good Luck and follow the diets listed in above posts. Good advice!

Lots of water, cut WAY back on red meats and rich food/drink. No alcohol until you get over it and then be careful.
