Yes...the war for oil is on....call it 'terrorism' if you want to candy-coat it, but, it is what it is.

"World War" is a very hard concept to define and it is also very much linked to western society. For example, the Russians have never thought in terms of "World Wars". They fought in Czar Alexander's War (our WWI) and the Great Patriotic War (our WWII) which no matter how much you want to inflate the western front was the REAL European war of the 1940s. The same could be said of the Chinese who think in terms of "the Revolution" which involved perpetual conflict between the Maoists, the Kuomantang, the Japanese, and invested European powers for almost twenty years which included our WWII. Anyway, my point here is it's only western society (North America and Western Europe) that have a concept of "World War" and that ought to first temper your view on the situation.

The next and perhaps more important point is I would say there are two conditions that set the "World Wars" apart from all of western society's other periods of belligerence:
(1) Both wars were fought between two alliances of the major industrial powers and their junior partners. There was very few technological or industrial differences between both sides. (In the end it was petroleum that proved to be the big difference in WWII, The Allies had it and the Axis didn't. That would be the one exception to this rule)
(2) On both sides mobilization for the war reached into every aspect of society, and I'm not talking about everyone knowing a soldier. Between 1942 and 1946, there were NO automobiles, appliances, and other large consumer goods ie: radios made in the United States or any of its allies. The same conditions held true in the case of the First World War among the same allies (with the exception of the late-in-entering US) There was food and fuel rationing, compulsory labour registration, mobility restrictions, widespread media controls, and detainment without due process for politically dangerous people. In short I was a society no of us who didn't live through it would recognize.

So, what I would say you need to do is ask yourself, does bombing several different economically backwards countries at once who do nothing but export resources and have very little chance of fighting back constitute our concept of "world war"? In my mind it most certainly does not

I think we are in the middle of an unofficial world war. Although the only declaration of war between Islamic Terrorists and the West has been Al Qaeda's 1998 declaration of war on Israel and the US, the current events have taken place all over the world with a common element of Islamic Extremism.

A little of both, the media wants to make some money so an overreaction attracts viewers (,readers, listeners, etc.) but i think that the middle east is headed for trouble

I agree with the above message.

I think it is media hype & political wrangling. The attack on Rumsfield by Hillary was completely politics - trying to get
nomination for presidency. No WWIII anytime soon.

Funny they don't "officially" say we are at war, didn't with vietnam anyway, until it was so obvious that they had to say so. Doesn't matter what it's called, people are dying in a country other than their own, far away from home, alone. except for their military family.

MEDIA hype? Do you mean YAHOO ANSWERES hype? I hear much more WW III speculation here, in the "mainstream media", not so much.
