the A340-200 and the -300 may not last long, but the A340-500 and the ultra-long -600 will be in service for a longer period of time compared to many ageing planes.

You are right!

The coming time should see two categories of aircrafts:

a. Short hauls---Gulfstreams, Embraers, bombardiers (because people will start sitting in their offices for video conferences and thus the longer trips will start declining).

b. Boeing 777, 787, Airbus 380 ---aircrafts with big turbo-fan engines---not the regular ones---A340 has four engines and gulps more fuel...
(because the population will keep on increasing and smaller aircrafts (like Boeing 737, 747, A320,A330) won't be able to keep up landing and take-offs for longer trips).

To summarize, you will see about 70% smaller aircrafts (as in a above) and 30% bigger aircrafts (as in b above) all over the world in next ten years....that's sure...and travel is going to be expensive again...after this brief stint of fare wars among the airlines!

Given how long 747s have been around, why not a successful, pleasurable and successful one like A340?

I still think they will be in production for quite a while, especially the -500 and -600s. They are still relatively modern aircraft...
