The manager charges them $30. They each pay $10, and go up to room. The manager decides he overcharged them, and sends the bellboy to the room to give them $5 back. The bellboy is angry because he didn't get a tip, so he keeps $2, and gives each guy back $1. So...each guy paid $10, but got $1 back. $9 x 3 is $27, plus $2 for the bellboy. Where did the other dollar go???

why would you say that they each payed 9 when they payed less then that to the hotel
they paid 25 all together not 27
so add the 25 the hotel got to the 5 the hotel gave back. theres your thirty.
it doesnt work out because you said each guy paid $10 minus one, which is true in their own sense, but in actuallity didn't happen. the guys paid $8.33333333 each, multiplied by 3 is 25. plus the three they got and the two the bellboy got makes 30
it didn't work earlier because you added the refunded 3 twice (adding 6) then subtracted 2 (making the added amount 4) when it should have been 5 by adding the 3 once and adding the 2

It's actually the problem of dealing with negative numbers.

It should read: 9x3=27, LESS $2 for the bellboy = $25, which is what was actually due ($30 paid less refund of $5).
