I use a child's swimming pool! It works great. You can buy a new one at Wal~Mart for just over $10 ($11.88 to be exact)! They are sanitary because they can be cleaned up quickly and easily. Plus, they will hold the puppies in for awhile!

Home Depot Look up online or a book at the pet store or library. Home Depot will cut the woor to size...and you just nail it together.
I did, it you can!
The idea behind the whelping box is the puppies have a place to hide if mommy lays on they can sneak to the side.
a regular dog house with just 2 x 4's about 2" up from floor is a great and easy whelping box...depends on the breed. It should
give mom much more room then she needs to lay out.
The more room the bigger chance of the puppies getting out in the cold away from mommies body heat.

You can build one out of plywood. I wouldn't use green treated and make sure to paint it. The bottom of mine is llined with a heavy plastic for easy cleaning and has pig rails.

If you have a small dog a kiddie pool would work, but if you have a heavier breed I would make one with pig rails so no puppy gets crushed. You can probably find plans online or else in a book.

I went to goodwill and bought a plastic kiddy pool and it works well and keeps them in for about 4-5 weeks. only cost 2 bucks!! plus its about 4 ft across and gives lots of room to roam and is easy to rinse and clean!

you can go to your local grocery store and get a box from them and just put an old towel and some newspaper in it for the mommy to tear up while she's in labor lol Thats what i got for my border collie and she had 7 great pups in it and loved it(of course i was her mid wife lol) good luck :)

I am a dog breeder and I have found that x-pens work great or you could make your own out of wood very cheap.
