Many people tell me it's wrong of me to be helpful & giving. Why? They tell me that I put myself in the position to be taken advantage of. How is that?

to some extent it is true. I think it is always correct to be nice.

But what people mean is "it is wrong to be too nice and it is wrong to be nice in some inappropriate situations."

Too nice means you are extra generous with your help - may be not wanted or seen as inviting to be taken advantage of.

Wrong time when the reciever does not deserve it. You see it is the interpretation of the reciever, if you are being nice at a time one does not deserve it - it is encouraging them to keep the status quo - where as you might want to change things for the better by being nice so that people reciprocate in the same way.

But it happens so that not all people return your nice behaviour rigthtly so it creates more problem then if you had done nothing.

Dealing with human behaviour is like playing chess, you have to plan several moves ahead. I wish it could be simple and very body was forgiving, understanding, fair and 'nice'.

Anyway, keep the smile on even if you refrain from doing that extra nice thing,

Enjoy

Being nice is not bad! If you put yourself in a position where you can be taken advantage of, the only one who has done wrong is the one that actualy takes advantage. It takes people to not be afraid to be honest and nice to make the world a better place. If more people stop being afraid of this, few will have to worry anymore. I'm not a bad person... I think most people are really good. You have to think that....

Better to be taking advantage of then to be so closed off you never experience the feeling of giving. In today's society you have to be a little gaurded just to keep from getting hurt and then cynical. I am a giver and have done so all my life which is considerable and I would not have it any other way but over the years I learned to help those who are truly in need and to give of my time expecting nothing in return. I never loan money, I give it with the thought if it is ever returned great and if not that's ok to because they must have needed it. When I lose money I do not stress over it my prayer is whoever finds it I just hope they truly need it and then that is that. Life is much sweeter when we do not have regrets of treating someone disrespectful. Nice is always a wise choice. Let your friends choose what they want. Good Luck

Which would you rather be, helpful and giving or suspicious and evil? Maybe by being nice you do sometimes put yourself in a position to be taken advantage of. However, I for one would rather follow my conscience and be on the side of good, even if I do get taken advantage of sometimes.

Many people nowadays do take advantage of nice people. If you give a man a $5 bill to buy fish, he will eat then come back for more. If you teach a man to fish he can feed himself and sell the rest he doesn't eat for money. In other words don't be someones crutch. It is good to be nice and helpful, but just don't be to helpful, someone might figure they don't have to stand if you are there.

It isnt wrong to be nice. The problem is that people think they are better than you and cheat, steal, or lie and think they are getting ahead of everyone else. The problem they don't realize is that they will get what they deserve in the end. I am a Christian and I believe God will give them their deserved punishment. None of us will ever get away from that. Tell you what.. keep doing nice things for them and forgive them for the bad things they do to you no matter what happens and I believe you will see something happen you never expected. Pray for them too. Prayer is very powerful tool. Remember this: do unto others as you want to be done to you. Love your enemies.

It is never wrong to be nice. You must develop being a good judge of character to prevent from being used. The people who are telling you not to be helpful and giving may have your best interests at heart. However, continue being nice...just be careful and do not allow people to use you because you are a good person.

It's not wrong at all to be nice, helpfull, or giving but your friends are right people will take advantage of this. You can still be nice just don't let yourself be walked over.

It's not wrong. These day's it's hard to find a nice person, sad I know, but many people take this to their advantage and use you. It's ok to be a nice person, but don't let people use you. :D
