We bought this car for 10k and there was no oil in the engine, which the repair shop said. The whole reason we took it to the shop is because the check engine light came on after 1 day of having the job. I understand the lemon law, but is there anything else that we could look at?

Here's a link to the Iowa state "Lemon Law" .

This is the law that most states have that protect consumers from this type of issue.

The lemon law applies to new vehicles only. If it's less than 2 years old and has less than 24,000 miles on it and if the manufacturer's warranty is still in force then a used car would be covered as well. However, operating a car without oil would not likely be covered as a reasonably prudent person would be expected to check the oil level.

Unless you have an explicit warranty on your car, there's really nothing that you can do. Unless your contract explicitly provides for a right of return, you have no such right.

Personally, I always check the oil on any car before I even test drive it, let alone buy it. And look under the hood and on the ground for any evidence of leakage.
