Depression is a disease that can be cured by a multi focus approach. Depression can come from various means, a loss, high stress, even the weather with SAD. Depression is an inbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. If you have thoughts of hurting yourself get professional help ASAP the disorder can be deadly as well. A visit to a doctor and discussing anti-depressants is a great idea, counseling secularly or through a church to work through issues is a very good idea as well. Prayer will also help someone work through to see the light side of life as well. Strong faith, reading the bible and talking to a preist can help someone pull through, and the support a community can help. A multidimensional course with a spiritual outlet as well is very smart. Ultimately it is a personal choice in the treatment but the cure is out there ( Catholic)

The Vedas teach that Yoga, Sandhya and Agnihotra can correct many physical and mental imbalances. Also, Ayurveda teaches a comprehensive plan to prevent such imbalances from occuring in the first place. I am sure this would work for depression as well.

Depression happens, even to believers. David got depressed, Jesus did too,... Id say crying and sweating blood praying for the cup to be taken from Him is a sign of depression. Its ok to be depressed, its when we stay there that the trouble starts. How can we not stay there? That all depends on the circumstances surrounding it and I can honestly say I dont have the answer. I basically just wanted to assure you, it's more common than you think.

I would most definitely go to a medical doctor and find out if there is an underlying cause for the depression that can be treated medically. I'm not saying religion won't help, but it could all be due to imbalance of body chemicals and such and should be checked out also.

If you think about it, a person who is depressed tends to be very focused on themselves, how bad they are, how hard life is for them, etc. The Bible says "there is more happiness in giving than receiving," so one thing that is needed is to do something for someone else. That helps to take the focus from self to others.
However, there are mood disorders that are more severe. I am going to include a link that gives some helpful Biblical counsel for dealing with these problems.

Depression is a medical illness, not a made-up thing. For every thought we have, there is a chemical reaction in our brains and bodies. Feelings and thoughts are , not imagined. Having said that:
Being Baha'i, here is one thing our scriptures say about seeking medical attention:
"Resort ye, in times of sickness, to competent
physicians; We have not set aside the use of material
means, rather have We confirmed it through this Pen,
which God hath made to be the Dawning-place of His
shining and glorious Cause."
(Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, p. 60)
Depression is a biochemical illness, so if you have depression, seek medical attention and get psychiatric treatment. Pray for healing, meditate with God, talk to others, write in a journal, draw, exercise, get plenty of rest, eat well, drink plenty of water. Depression's cure - or maybe not cure, but management - is multi-faceted. It affects every fibre of one's being, so maintenance of it comes in many forms.
Please seek help in all forms. There is NO SIN in having depression, nor is it a manifestation of bad morals, or character defects, or spiritual depravity, that's b/s. It's a bona fide illness, please seek help. If you need meds, please don't be afraid to take them. For the diabetic, insulin is needed. For the person with depression, medication is needed. It won't take away your problems, nor will it change who you are. It will only take that "edge" off so that you can see clearly and get your problems better. Meds aren't "cheating" nor are they the "easy way out." I take meds, and it's certainly not the easy way out. That's like telling the diabetic not to take insulin, that insulin is the "easy way out." Insulin is biochemically needed, and so are depression medications.

According to Christianity, it is perfectly fine to see your doctor about depression. If your doctor prescribes something in order to treat your depression, it's perfectly acceptable to take the medicine. What's not allowed is buying anti-depressents illegally, stealing them, getting drunk, or doing illegal drugs to get away from your depression. There's nothing wrong with using anti-depressents when following your doctor's advice.
Of course I would also pray about my state of depression. God answers prayers!

Psalm 72
12 For He (God) will deliver the poor one crying for help,
Also the afflicted one and whoever has no helper.
13 He will feel sorry for the lowly one and the poor one,
And the souls of the poor ones he will save.
Psalm 51
17 The sacrifices to God are a broken spirit;
A heart broken and crushed, O God, you will not despise.
Philiphians 4
4 Always rejoice in [the] Lord. Once more I will say, Rejoice! 5 Let YOUR reasonableness become known to all men. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving let YOUR petitions be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God that excels all thought will guard YOUR hearts and YOUR mental powers by means of Christ Jesus.
----
Support from others:
1 Thessalonians 5
12 Now we request YOU, brothers, to have regard for those who are working hard among YOU and presiding over YOU in [the] Lord and admonishing YOU; 13 and to give them more than extraordinary consideration in love because of their work. Be peaceable with one another. 14 On the other hand, we exhort YOU, brothers, admonish the disorderly, speak consolingly to the depressed souls, support the weak, be long-suffering toward all. 15 See that no one renders injury for injury to anyone else, but always pursue what is good toward one another and to all others.
16 Always be rejoicing. 17 Pray incessantly. 18 In connection with everything give thanks. For this is the will of God in union with Christ Jesus respecting YOU. 19 Do not put out the fire of the spirit. 20 Do not treat prophesyings with contempt. 21 Make sure of all things; hold fast to what is fine. 22 Abstain from every form of wickedness.
23 May the very God of peace sanctify YOU completely. And sound in every respect may the spirit and soul and body of YOU [brothers] be preserved in a blameless manner at the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who is calling YOU is faithful, and he will also do it.

Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (for example: instead of I'm all alone; saying God is with me; instead of saying nobody loves me; saying God accepts me and loves me so much that he died for me, et cettra). Whatever is pure, lovely, of good report...etc. think on these things
Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Be thankful and give thanks.
Don't worry about anything, but in everything with prayer and thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Trust God.
Help others in need, and the Lord will help you.
Laughter and spending time with friends.
