It depends on your comfort level with this person. Is he a friend or relative? Or, simply an acquaintance? Hopefully, you are the kind of person that would still be friends with someone who is gay. Remember, that all people, straight or gay, have feelings, and rejection is absolutely devastating, even when it's from a "friend". Just be yourself, be friendly, and be comfortable. If he has something to tell you, let him come to you.

Most of the time you can tell by their body language and clothing sytle. However, why do you want to ask him directly? Some gay or bi ppl dont like being asked regarding to their sexual preference.

I don't really think that's a sign. I wouldn't even ask him, what's it matter? If you like the person as a friend, their sexuality shouldn't matter at all.
