You feel incredibly guilty if you eat anything, you only eat things that you feel are "safe", you feel that you're fat even though ppl tell you you're thin or even too thin, you feel like the only thing you have "control" over is what you eat... Some physical signs could be that you've stopped menstruating, your hair has thinned out, your skin is dry, you feel very forgetful or like you can't concentrate, you don't have much energy (although a lot of anorexics excercise as well) and you constantly deny your hunger even when it's almost unbearable...

You also make bad decisions and avoid a lot of social activities b/c you might feel pressure to eat something. A lot of anorexics tend to only eat a few things, like 2 or 3 different foods, and some don't drink enough water b/c they're afraid of "water weight" (although ppl tend to retain water when they don't drink enough... but that's the kind of irrational thinking an anorexic has). If you or someone you know sounds like this or has ANY of these tendancies, do all that you can to get help ~ and the sooner you nip this in the bud, the better. I think most girls dabble with anorexia at some point in their lives, it's just the ones who take it to that extra level who end up spiralling downhill and wind up damaging their bodies (in some cases beyond repair). You only get one shot at life and being skinny shouldn't be your number one goal. And if you look at any anorexic it's obvious that they aren't happy, no matter how thin they get.

Oh, and unlike what some ppl have suggested here, throwing up is NOT a sign of anorexia. That is bulimia, although it is not uncommon to have both disorders at the same time.

Here's the website for the National Eating Disorders Association:

Here is the criteria, by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition:

There are four basic criteria for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa that are characteristic:

1. The refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height. Body weight less than 85% of the expected weight is considered minimal.
2. An intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though the person is underweight.
3. Self-perception that is grossly distorted and weight loss that is not acknowledged.
4. In women who have already begun their menstrual cycle, at least three consecutive periods are missed (amenorrhea), or menstrual periods occur only after a hormone is administered.

There is more, but if you do not have those three, you are NOT anorexic. If you suffer from a few of them, however, you might be suffering from EDNOS - Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified - which can be just, if not more dangerous. If you think you have any eating disorder, go to a doctor.

Anorexia is a medical condition the most obvious symptom of which is a partial or complete loss of apetite or a general aversion to food. That's not to say that if you don't feel like eating it's because your anorexic - loss of apetite has many causes and anorexia has many symptoms.

If you've been avoiding food for some time now (more than a week) or generally haven't felt like eating then you probably have some form of eating disorder or some condition which is causing an eating disorder. There can be many such conditions and if I thought about it hard enough I could probably list 100 possible causes - of which at least 99 would be wrong. Only a physician who has examined you can give an accurate diagnosis.

Please accept my apologies if I'm wrong but I'm guessing that you may believe yourself to be anorexic - maybe because you're eating very little, you're not eating at all or you're avoiding eating or perhaps it's because you consider yourself to be underweight.

As a very rough guide an average female should be eating in the order of 2000 kCal (8000 kJ) a day - in some cases more or less will be perfectly OK. If your daily Calorie intake falls much short of this then you need to be looking into the reasons for this. As mentioned, there could be any number of reasons and it's something you need to seek the advice of a physician or dietitian about.

A indication as to whether you are over or underweight can be given by determining your Body Mass Index (BMI). The websites below explain more about BMI and include BMI calculators...

The following websites offer more info about anorexia...

Above all, if there's anything that's causing you concern then please seek professional advice on a one to one basis - it's the only way to get accurate information.

Unless you are an elite athlete, exercising like you are one. Purge via vomiting or diarrhea via laxatives. Food binges followed by starving yourself. These are just a few of the many signs. A psychologist is the only one who can properly evaluate, it is a mental illness. There is no cure, like alchoholism.

if your bmi is more than 2 or 3 below average and people say you don't eat enough then you are probably anorexic.

Honey, if you think you are then you need to talk with someone you trust. It wouldn't hurt to see your doctor. I just made a post not five minutes ago under women's health about fashion models. We men DO NOT find these sticks attractive!!!! I have a Friend who works in an eating disorders clinic, she helps girls get better! Please talk to somebody - your worth it!
