Staying on property is expensive, but worth it - especially with kids. You can take the monorail from your hotel to the park, which makes it easy to go back to the hotel if you've forgotten anything or for a nap.

One of the best kept secrets is Garden Grove! Just south of Anaheim on Harbor Boulevard is a cluster of new hotels that are close to Disneyland, but a world away as far as prices go.
There is an Embassy Suites, Marriott Suites, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn, Hyatt Regency. The hotels are all only a year or two old and are in an area with restaurants and shopping. They all have pools, but no slides. Most of the hotels have packages available with tickets and the hotel.
After you compare prices, call the Disney resorts and see about packages they may have. Sometimes the convenience of being right on the property makes it worth staying there, especially with little kids. And even if you decide to stay off property, I would pay the $10 to park in the Disney parking. No little kid wants to have to wait for the shuttle at the end of the day! And no mom wants to have to listen to the whining that follows!

I usually like to think that not staying at a Disney hotel is a good idea, 2 years ago my wife and I had no kids one weekend, and stayed at one of the supposed nicer places outside the park. And let me tell you it was a bad bad idea just to save 20$ a night.
The only places around, or rather near Disneyland is Embassy suites or the Holiday Inn on Ball Rd. But I would seriously consider staying at one of their hotels there, The Grand Californian, Paradise Pier or the Disneyland Hotel. Go to Expedia.com and check out any and all package deals. We went to Disneyworld last year, we found a great package including hotel and tickets.
