I will be 18 in two weeks. I want my parents to be out of my life. How do I go about this? Do I need to legally divorce them or do I just move out? I don't want to go into the details of why because I don't want speeches about forgiving my parents, etc. I'm just hoping that someone will just let me know the details of getting out of a relationship with parents. I don't want the to have access to my life, and I don't want them to have access to my future children.

When you turn 18, your parents have no legal say in your life. You do not need to legally divorce them.

I would like to recommend, "Divorcing a Parent: Free Yourself from the Past and Live the Life You've Always Wanted", by Beverly Engels. This book gives excellent advice for arriving at the decision to divorce a parent as well as advice on what to expect after you do divorce a parent. This book helped me immeasurably.

Good luck.

At 18 you're legally an adult. However, if you're planning on going to college, they consider your parents to be financially responsible for you until you're 23 (in NY state).

I can see different reasons why you might want your parents out of your life, none of which have to do with rebellion. If you have a job and are capable of moving out and being on your own, at 18 you should legally be able to do so and they technically can't stop you.

There is not any legal way to disown your parents. At age 18, you have reached the age of majority and you do not have to communicate with them but to disown them?

Just move out. You're 18. Their parental rights are over at this point. The only thing is if you ever come into money and want to make sure they don't inherit any of it you would have to do a will and exclude them specifically.

Just one thing: If they know what the problem is maybe just tell them when you move out not to contact you. If they don't it is only fair to tell them what the problem is.

i understand. but do make sure that is what you want before you do it. but the way you are talking, im sure it is. i dont think it is necessary to make this a legal battle unless they get ugly about the situation and cause it to turn into that. i would just move out, preferably away from the area they are living in, and start your life. you're 18, there is nothing they can do!

All you have to do is move away. Leave them a note and tell them you have moved so they don't think you are a missing person. Don't contact them.
