In the Srimad-Bhagavatam this question is answered very directly by a great devotee of the Lord, Prahlada Maharaja: "Prahlada Maharaja said: Hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name, form, qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of the Lord, remembering them, serving the lotus feet of the Lord, offering the Lord respectful worship with sixteen types of paraphernalia, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming His servant, considering the Lord one's best friend, and surrendering everything unto Him (in other words, serving Him with the body, mind and words) -- these nine processes are accepted as pure devotional service."
If you want to investigate this subject further, you can read this quote and the commentary online: http://www.krishna.com/e-books/Srimad-Bhagavatam_Canto_07.pdf

Your question is too vague. There are people who build gods and They have to evoke and invoke all types of ceremonies. When you decide which God you are talking about, and when you know what you call worship, then you can ask over--that is, assuming that you really want intelligent answers.
