Atheists seem to be a target here. There was a time - in polite society - when one's political and religious affiliations were private. I was raised in that environment and still feel that way. No matter how "right" or "true" you think your religion is, that does not entitle you to attempt to convert me. My beliefs are my private business.

The level of intolerance in America seems to have grown exponentially in recent years. Ironic, when you consider that the country was founded by a group fleeing religious persecution. Please, believe whatever you like...but grant me the same courtesy.

Later...
Some readers don't seem to think I asked a question, so I'll re-phrase it: why do so many people attack atheists? Do Christians feel threatened by atheists?

Yes, I'm a newbie here, and I'm surprised at the amount of hatred I see expressed toward all minorities. Guess I'm just naive....

I would say most people who partake in atheism (not all) like to either make fun of Christians (or any God-fearing people) and/or show their extreme hate for God and they want to make this known anytime God is in the subject, especially on the Internet where people act the nastiest and moronic on "any" subject . This isn't just this site, it's any site, mention God and someone will try to push Atheism or something negative about Religion.

Point 1... take a little while to read the questions and answers by atheists... 90% are crude, nasty, and perverted. Christians arent always peaches and cream but they're not as nasty as these people

Point 2: If you are an atheists, then you, by nature, should have no belief or interest in Religion & Spirituality. If you come here and get preached to, thats your fault. Don't go to the medical site if you dont want to discuss medical issues.

I've asked a question samiliar to yours, except I asked about Athiests being mean and rude to Christians. But I've learned that it's because some Christians have been swearing at Athiests and hurting them badly (mentally, not physically) because they're not Christians.
But another reason that I learned is because some Christians think they have a lot of power since they think God is on their side since they believe in Him and so they can boss around some Athiests.
And also that some Athiests (and Anti-Christs) have been mean to Christians (and not because Christians hurt them) because they think that God created evil and everything bad. Someone even started saying that God took his dad away. And then they start calling Christians mean names so then some Christians get them back by doing the same to other Athiests. So you can't expect it to be the Christians fault sometimes, sometimes it's the Athiests and other people.
So one main reason is because some of us don't want Athiests and Anti-Christs to be what they are. Some of us want them to become Christians.
I've been arguing to an Anti-Christ person one day because he started arguing with another Christian and calling him names and I just got that trait from my mom--arguing and also because I don't want that person to start calling Christians that. I feel really bad now because I know it's because I'm just...mean to him kind of. I'm not accepting what he believes and I didn't even notice that when I argued with him.
And I'm really sorry for being mean to any Athiest or anybody else. I also hope that Christians or maybe most of them will learn that Athiests and everyone else REALLY WANTS to believe what they want to believe instead of Christians telling them what to believe.

And for some Christians, if the non-Christians (this isn't supposed to sound offending, the "non-Christians" word.) are nice to them, they're nice back.

If you are so concerned about your religious beliefs being private why are you opening it up in here? There is nothing private on the net. You have opened it up by coming in here. No one would know unless you yourself brought it up. If i didn't want anyone to know that i was a Christian, the last place i would go would be to a website. There is nothing private in public.

Everyone is an atheist in some regard. They may not know it, recognize it, or talk about it, but everyone has doubts, it is only human. I agree that beliefs are personal, but in this age very little stays that way. It is better to discuss religion here, where you needn't fear those you offend, than in real life, where an insult may have unwanted effects.

OK, and for some truly brilliant statements, check out this link with quotes from Rev. Jerry Falwell, Rev. Jimmy Swaggart (my personal favourite), and Rev. Pat Robertson -- and others.

And then let us know why the world is in such a mess, with people like this trying to inspire others to take leadership.

Religion is about to be overthrown by homosexuality and trans-gender people. If trans-gender people have a genetic reason for being born that way, God's perfection will be unmasked a fraud. That's why religion is scared right now with homosexuals. They know the end is near.

this is true. however, atheists are also doing the attacking on here. i have read countless "questions" that insulted people of different religions by atheists. it doesn't matter what side of the religious spectrum you are on, you will always get insulted. there are many atheists on here that are trying to get me to reject my beliefs. i dont appreciate that. i see where you are coming from, but from a different perspective.

Did you post this in the wrong section?

This is the "Religion & Spirituality" section, so what would you have people discuss? Maybe we should discuss recipes or fashion.

BTW, I'm an atheist and questions or answers attacking atheists don't bother me.

I think it is such a topic here because there is so little tolerance for atheists. Someone just posted an article about it. I'll find it for you.
