It very well could be. There are a ton of websites that offer diagnoses on knee pain.

I suspect you tried to do too much too soon in terms of running. It can be a tough sport, especially on your knees.

Some suggestions:
1) Get good running shoes (not cross trainers). If your shoes are shot, get new ones.
2) use the neoprene Ace-Brand knee wraps. They do work wonders. I used to have knee problems and I wear them now as preventative measures when I jog... You can get them at WalMart for $15 - $20. They really do work.

3) Avoid hills / banked surfaces.
4) Strengthen your quads -- they are the leg's shock obsorbers.
5) Cut back on your mileage, intensity and give yourself extra time to recover. If you are running 5 times a week, cut it down to 3 or so and cross train by swimming or elliptical training.

You can ice / aleve to help with pain. It will subside in time and you can give it another shot.

If you want, see a doctor, but I suspect they'll more or less tell you the same thing I did (unless the injury is more serious). They may send you to physical therapy to strength your knee / quadricep.

Good luck and hope you feel better.

This happened to me when I would run everyday 3 miles, the only thing that I could do was stop running until the pain went away and then I only ran every other day after that and would ride my bike on the days I didn't run been doing that for a year pain has never returned. Hope this helps, Good Luck

If you can walk without pain, I'd suggest a knee wrap you can get them at wally mart and they're miracle workers. You'll need to keep your knee wrapped day and night if possible for about 5 days. This wrap will give it a chance to heal and support at the same time. Take some ibuprofen too for swelling. It will need rest.

Pain is the body's way of telling you there is a problem, especially if there is swelling with it. See your doctor. Do not run until you do, you can only make things worse.

It sounds like you pound your heels when you run. when you are running you need to stay on the balls of your feet.
