It didn't begin with Seth, Abel and Cain are mention, it is just that Abel was killed and Cain was left to wander the earth, so the true descendant for Jesus was through Adam to Seth and so forth

It isnt a "family tree" for one thing. Abel was killed, Cain was cast away so the first geneological line followed is Seth's

Abel was killed by Cain.
Cain ran off with one of his sisters and had his own family.
Seth did the same.

He is the one by whom all the other iomportant people desend from. Abel died before he had kids. Kain was cursed and his descendants were some of the people wiped out in the flood.
