go to airline's site and it will link to all the information. you can exchange miles for e-tickets online, most charge a small cash fee now, though.

go to the web site of the airline youll be taking, sign up BEFORE you depart, you can either sign up online or go to the airline booth and ask for an fill in document for frequent flyer miles. make sure you do this before you leave. once your signed up youll be given online either a print out id card with a serial number or be sent by mail, the important thing is to get hold of that serial number.
on the day of your departure, when your at the check in, LET THEM KNOW you have your frequent flyer card, you can either give them the serial number if you dont have the print out card with your or just hand it to them to copy the number. from then your all set. that single flight will be counted. on your return flight you have to do the same, dont forget!! its a hell of hassel getting the credit back AFTER you already flew, its possible, but its a mess, been there done that.
also, check on the airline youll be flying, some airlines are real a$sholes and dont give you credit unless you pay a full non discounted ticket (like British Airways). instead of calling it BA miles, i call it, BS miles. NOT worth flying that airline if you want to gain the credit.
to get a free flight i think its around 10,000 to 30,000 miles (dont remmeber) you have to cover to get a free rountrip ticket in the US, to get a free rountrip ticket to europe, its 50,000. it sounds like a lot but you get the credit for it if yoiu have fly frequently.
i study abroad so every summer and xmas i fly back to calif. covering around 15,000 miles per trip. i have on more rountrip to go until i get my free ride :)
note: do NOT sign up for different frequent flyer miles in different airlines, why? because they are all teamed up in groups, there is the Star Alliance (group of airlines), SkyTeam, Oneworld Aliance. with in those three there are the big main airlines. for example, i take air france and when i need to switch to continental, i can use the same air france frequent flyer card WITHOUT starting a seperate account with continental. same with all the other grouped airlines.
