Check the codes in the computer, could be an engine sensor causing this, and or the tranny may have codes set , in general like the shift solnoids, or tranny temp sensor. If there are no codes then you will be looking at tearing th etranny down. I recommend a good Transmision Mechniac to do this.

examine the two "velocity sensors" on the transmission. They circulate out and have condemmed many Taurus transmissions that folk theory have been undesirable and in basic terms necessary a 40 dollar section. different than for sensing velocity, and so on. between the flaws that the two velocity sensors do on modern automatics is to confirm the stress loss interior the transmission with the aid of evaluating the out and in speeds. this can provide the transmission pc a determination on the wear and tear of the seize plates and bands or different linked factors and adjusts the hydraulic stress as a result whilst the shifts ensue. various of sensors undesirable and the pc thinks that the transmission is slipping 'badly" and supply complete hydraulic stress to shift it and you gets very no longer situation-free "kick interior the pants" shifts. astounding how no longer situation-free those can get whilst this occurs as like dumping the seize on a handbook transmission. those sensors are very truthfully replaced and occasional-value. likely you will locate some steel debris on the magnetic ends of them once you do away with them and those are likely to be from primary placed on and tear on the trans. in case you're doing this your self you would be able to scrub the sensors off with them out of the vehicle and reinstall as now and back in simple terms an accumulation of steel debris is sufficient to throw the magnetic sensor off so a techniques that this occurs. usually nevertheless this is the sensors themselves. substitute the two as they typically become worse around a similar time and you likely have no thank you to good sorting out them besides. a save will quickly substitute them the two regardless to cover their butt with comebacks. in case you're no longer slipping and the vehicle became into working ok earlier this then the sensors are the area to start up. do no longer ignore to sparkling the pc thoroughly of codes with the aid of removing the battery for half-hour earlier commencing and utilising after the restore so as that the pc can relearn the recent sensor readings. Shifts could be a tad harsh after new sensors for a jiffy, yet as quickly as the pc learns the trans back it is going to alter the hydraulic stress all the way down to habitable levels.

Have your trans checked out. This vehicle is famous for trans problems. Go with a replacment if it comes down to it. You will get a 3/36 warranty on the new trans. Re-builds are a bad idea.

IT SOUNDS AS IF YOUR FIRST AND SECOND GEAR IS GRINDING, WHICH MEANS THAT SOON YOU WILL EITHER HAVE TO HAVE YOUR TRANSMISSION REBUILT, OR GET ANOTHER ONE.
