Yes they should, but usually its a rule of thumb that milk is good for seven days after the sell by date.

They do have a drink by date on it! What milk to you buy? Check the top of the carton.

Well obviously you should drink it before the sell by date. And every milk carton has one...I've seen them.

I can't count the quarts of milk I have thrown out because it soured before the sell by date. I have a good refridgerator, so don't say that. You never know how that stuff is handled at the dairy or store. And I find that milk from some stores last longer than others.

Sometimes they have a 'use by' date printed. In other cases, they're probably figuring they can't predict what you'll do with the milk once it leaves the store; since some idiot might interpret the 'use by' date as a guarantee and not a suggestion, he might sue if the milk goes bad even if it was his own damn fault. John Edwards made millions on this kind of stupidity.

The drink by date is the same as the sell by date. Most generally if you haven't drank the milk by that time you need to toss it.

Well the drink by date comes into play with when it's opened in addition to when the sell by date was so that amkes it difficult to have a drink by date becasue they don't know when you opened it. You can use the sell by date and smell as a guide on when to stop drinking it.
