Yes, other countries including ours have events that may be cruel to animals but...I don't think that the Chinese should have BEAT the dogs to death, there are other options to destroy them. Even shooting them would have been kinder.

Yes, they should. The way to educate countries with poor human and animal rights records is not to make them more isolated. We have to show them there is a better way (and not by bombing them and invading them EITHER!)

It's not how I would have handled it if I were the Chinese government, but at least they had a reasonable purpose in killing those dogs - they had a rabies epidemic and three people had already died. How many dogs are slaughtered in the USA every year, just because no one wants them???? How many innocent pit bulls have been seized and euthanized, just because of their breed? Who are we to preach?

There are still festivals in small towns in Spain and Italy and elsewhere where animals like goats are thrown off buildings or chickens have their heads ripped from their bodies for the crowd's amusement. Do we boycott THEIR Olympics? There are still bullfights in Spain and Mexico - do we boycott THEIR Olympics?

For those who didn't read about it:
According to USA Today
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-08-01-china-dogs_x.htm?csp=34
"The Shanghai Daily said 360 of Mouding county's 200,000 residents suffered dog bites this year. The three rabies victims included a 4-year-old girl, the report said."

If there is an epidemic, you can't quarantine 50,000 dogs and wait to see if they have rabies. There is no test that I know of that can determine if the dog is a carrier - you have to study the brain on autopsy. Asia is having huge problems with the bird flu - I guess their knee jerk reaction is to kill the animals before more people start to die.

The Chinese culture doesn't appear to have any concept of kindness and mercy. They do horribly cruel things to animals all the time without the slightest sense of shame. To tell the truth, they don't treat humans much better.
I don't think that they should have gotten the Olympics in the first place and I think THE WHOLE WORLD should boycott them.

I know!!! Wasn't that like the saddest and most disgusting thing ever?! I agree with one of the other answers...if they still have it there then the US should boycott.

I'm sorry about the dogs, but shouldn't we be more concerned what they do to human beings?
