A girl at the petstore said no to your question because parakeets are going to pick on cockatiels.
I used to have a cockatiel and a lovebird in the same cage. The cockatiel was tame. I tamed the lovebird but it liked the cockatiel better than me. Put them in separate cages next to each other so they will get used to each other and hopefully bond. When you have them together outside cages or in one cage keep watching to make sure they don't fight or kill each other. If they don't get along you can always get a parakeet for your parakeet and then keep the cockatiel as YOUR pet since it's already tame.

If the parakeet is gentle, it may get along fine with a cockatiel. Parakeets (budgies) as a rule are more aggressive than cockatiels, so you have to exercise discretion. Maybe you should introduce the parakeet into the cockatiel's cage instead of the other way around. I had an older female cockatiel who was grieving and wouldn't stop laying eggs after her mate died. After trying everything else without success, I got her a young hand-fed parakeet. She quit laying eggs and they became best friends. Eventually she died also, so my daughter (without warning) bought a young cockatiel to keep the parakeet company. They are good friends.

I wouldn't let them share a cage, at least not until they have established a good relationship. Even then, they might prefer to have their own "space." I had a tame cockatiel and a tame parakeet and they didn't get along at all- I couldn't take them out at the same time! The cockatiel LOVED the parakeet: he'd sing to her, bob his head, make happy noises. The parakeet always charged at the cockatiel, screeched at him and tried to bite him! So, mine didn't get along... but I know others who have had both and they got along famously.

We have a cockatiel and a parakeet in the same cage and they get along just fine. Sure they get in a tiff every once in a while...but that's normal. When I first started dating my husband, he had a parakeet, a cockatiel, and a sunday conure in the same cage....but they were allowed to fly free around the room all the time and they all got along just fine.

It isn't a good idea to mix other species together. Could cause health issues on both birds from both stress and/or fighting. It can even be risky housing two birds of the same species in the same cage.
