Yes, what you are talking about is surround sound. The most recognized brand name for surround sound and digital surround sound encoding is Dolby. Surround sound can be achieved with a home theater audio system that typically includes from 4 to 6 speakers (the six speaker set typically is two front corner speakers, two rear corner speakers, a center speaker, and a subwoofer). The speakers are connected to the TV through a receiver that sends the correct information to each speaker.
Here are some theater systems with customer ratings:

Crutchfield, the company I linked to, has excellent sales people who go through extensive ongoing training and can answer any questions you have about audio for your home theater. The reps actually get to try most of the systems out themselves and really know what they are talking about.

well the number of speakers depends on what type of surround sound you want. most dvd's are in 5.1 surround sounds. that is, 2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers, and 1 center channel. the .1 refers to the subwoofer. a subwoofer is not necessary to get surround sound.
here's a basic setup for 5.1 surround sound:
L Front speaker TV R Front Speaker
Center
(above or below TV)
L Rear speaker R Rear speaker
The subwoofer would go on the floor either next to the tv or behind seating area.
Most important: you need a receiver that is capable of producing surround sound. any receiver sold at a major electronics store will do it. but you can't use any type of book shelf system.

Yes it is surround sound. plus it's kind of better to have a surround with 5 speakers and a subwoofer in it! it sounds like your really in the movie. its also good to look around before you get one. bestbuy.com is a good place to look because it has all of the features listed so you can compare. i did that and instead of buying a sony system, i got an off brand with the same stuff and even a little more! the sony one had 4 speakers and no sub woofer. the one that i got had 5 speakers and a sub woofer and it sounds great!!! ^-^ plus i've had it for 2 1/2 years now! and i saved like $30!!!!
Good luck and happy searching!
P.S. it's fun to brag to all of my friends about it when they got the sony system with only 4 speakers!!! ^-^

Are you feeding the gadget a embody sound sign whilst the communicate does not artwork? some structures will in basic terms provide you stereo, sound out of the left and real front audio gadget, whilst there isn't any 5.a million sign being fed to them. the different component to do is examine in case you gadget has a calibration mode, maximum decent structures do. In calibration mode the reciever sends sound to a minimum of one speaker at a time so as which you would be able to set tiers. placed your gadget in calibration mode and notice in case you get sound out of the middle speaker.

well, it wont actually be surround sound if just the speakers are hooked up and working.. The actual surround sound will come from the receiver where it is decoded.. Also, you could call these speakers: Satellite Speakers...

go to staples and buy a home theater system or do like i did in my room. i got a converter that converts head phone plug into rca jack plugs. then i ran two rca cords from my tvs headphone jack to my stereo, then bought speaker wire and extended my four speakers to all 4 courners. this works good and has fairly good sound quality

What you are looking for is called either surround sound or home theater. If just starting out and there is no one there to help you, I would suggest you start with a htib (home theater in a box). Everything you need is there, very easy and simple to hook up.

My Fisher audio home center handles that for me. The tv/vcr and XM radio go through it. My computer has independent speakers but it too could go through it.
