As far as I know, six months, then you have to return for a like period. Why don't you call INS and ask?

for less than 6 months, anything more than that most likely you will need some sort of permit. If you pass the limit, you might be in risk of lossing you green card, but I am no Immigration officer or anything, you want real and straight answers go to USCIS.GOV or call their costumer service at 1-800-375-5283

I would say as long as you would like and the card wont be expired when you return.
