There is no such exclusive preference for Irishmen in recruitment though they won't decline to accept an Irish candidate. On the other hand I heard that during he time the struggle with Ireland was at its peak Irish candates were given a low priority for recruitment. In any case at that time no Irishman would have cared to be seen as a British Police Officer.Earlier Irishmen had held quite responsible poice post, especially in India. The Superintendent of the Andamaan Jail was an Irishman whom the inmates would taunt for serving the people who had enslaved Ireland.

Now, of course, there is no prohibition or preference for Irishmen.

No but the Irish just make great cops. Have you ever tried pushing a guy around who was of Irish origin. This could be a very bad choice.

Don't be silly,if you really want to be a cop you need to stop thinking that way. There are white, black, red, yellow ,brown and all the beautiful colors in between that are police officers. If you speak a foreign language any language you will make more money as a translator and still be a cop .Good luck

I heard that too. But I think it is only in Chicago and New York. Call around the police academys and ask where there is the most need for officers and that might give you an idea of where to live.

Of course not. If you can meet height, weight, mental and physical standards, they would probably love to have you. The old saw about Irish cops is certainly not true today,.

Yes, it's true. I know lots of cops and every one of them has an Irish last name, no matter what race they are. It's very strange.

That might well be the case in Ireland but you'd better make sure you know whether it's Northern Ireland or The Republic of Ireland which has that...lol
