Same rule holds for the ten commandments as for all law which follows, including those mostly enforced around the world.
*** No written law with penalty --- no punishment. ***
I think it should be fairly obvious that law is not designed to create common sense. Most of us know when somebody is stealing from us and when murder is committed. But that knowledge does not carry any penalty other than personal retribution.
The Bible is there to tell you that, not only must you answer to others, you must also answer to God. I don't know why this would upset you; seeing you have no God other than your own ideas.
Your very question indicates you feel some people, in particular God believers, must answer to you. How quaint? Or should I say religious?

On what do you base your statement that it is wrong to murder?
Without God, there is no reason to believe that murder or anything else is wrong. It is a law, and without an authority from whence does law come?
If you believe in evolution, that we came from nothing, then where would such a law come from? There is no such thing as "common sense." If left up to humans, one man's right is another man's wrong. You don't have to spend much time on Yahoo Answers to figure that out.
In fact, following the teaching of evolution, growth and development come out of death, therefore death is good. Why should it be wrong to murder? Especially, if you are murdering to better the species.
You're right that we don't need the Bible to tell us that murder is wrong. No, the law of God is written on men's hearts. However, we do need the Bible to tell us that God loves us, always has, and always will.
Romans 2:12-16
All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, SINCE THEY SHOW THAT THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW ARE WRITTEN ON THEIR HEARTS, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

Belief in God and His Holy Word the Bible is all the common sense one needs! The Bible is our guide book in this life! By reading the Bible we learn what is right and wrong for our lives! The Bible is where we get our morals from!

well. how can an atheist have a solid sense of morality when they don't have anything to lose? It sounds just as ridiculous doesn't it? Its just as false. there are certain laws of nature and society that most of us follow not because someone else tells us or to risk losing a space in an afterlife. Its called a concience and everyone has one reguardless of religious preference except sociopaths. Some christians just use the bible to back up their other beliefs like well the bible says not to kill and we all know that is wrong (because it is not generally socially acceptable) so this is why abortion or homosexuality is wrong. Its stupid but thats just the way some people think. You can't assume this is what everyone thinks just because some people use it in certain arguments.

What you call common sense needs to be learned. The bible is full of common sense about how to live and co-exist. A lot of values in society today are from the Bible you just don't recognize this. Social order and propriety have to come from somewhere.

We do have values and base them on common sense which comes from the teachings of the Bible. A baby doesn't know right from wrong until it's taught, so how can you have "common sense" unless you're taught?

Your Common Sense or mine? Eh?
Problem is there is no common common sense. You cannot base a society on what you or I think because we don't think the same things. We might think something is right one day and not another depending our mood, hormones or who you are talking to or any other vague whim
The bible contains timeless absolute truth and is not subject to human whims (except maybe in the interpretation).
Murder is obvoius but how about how to treat your fellow man?
How to avoid selfishness? Your own sense of worth?
Truth is not found in your own head mate!

Common Sense is the ability of the Common Man to rule himself (instead of a King, as Thomas Paine coined the phrase)
So perhaps your "God Believers" are simply proving Paine wrong....... there is no Common Sense.....

What is common sense. Every body thinks different; so common sense is a delusion. God gave us the real sense. His laws are eternal; He really knows right from wrong. Humans have a vague idea of it and they call it, common sense. God bless you!!!

Do you know where you got that common sense? God has told us in his revealed word that He wrote His laws on the hearts of all men. God is the giver of conscience.
As for your comment on believers being crazy, God also mentioned that the message of the cross if foolishness to unbelievers and scoffers. So your abusive comment is utterly expected and further proof of the authority of God's word.
I would suggest reading the gospel of John. In that book, you will find out about God's love for you and His desire for you to return to Him.
Grace and Peace to you.
