It seems to me that most people who post questions about religion are merely seeking to insult others and get affirmation about their own views, as opposed to actually asking valid questions. Atheists pose questions to Believers, and then turn around and pick an answer that was supplied by another atheist! Believers post questions the allegedly challenge atheists, but are actually just thinly disguised invitations to damnation. Why don't these people just post "Why am I so great and all the people who think differently than me so dumb?" It would save us all a lot of time!

Sorry to rant, but I am Catholic and enjoy discussions based on beliefs, and have studied much of religious history. I had hoped ot find more opportunities to do so on this site, but what I find much more of is uselss insults, faulty logic, and mindless jabberings on both sides!

Please be advised, I am not trying to insult others, but some of you think I am. I suppose some apologies are in order, but basically, why can't people post serious questions. I DO want a serious answer to this, so I am not in the same boat as others, and I welcome views from atheists as well as theists.

I think from the atheist you feel the frustration over those members of the theist camp who simply cannot leave other people alone (if you don't think they exist, you've never been on the receiving end of it; if you're one that dispenses it, and find no problem with that, then none of this should surprise you).

I think if theists didn't try so damn hard to promote themselves in every available public arena, making it difficult to escape theism for the atheist, atheists would have no incentive to ATTEMPT reasoning with theists. Theists generally hold as part of the doctrine that were handed down to them from other theists from the past that they must go out and make disciples. Atheists have no such impetus to convert anyone until tread upon by the disciple-makers. Then the motivation is self-preservation.

Nonetheless, most atheists know you cannot convert those who have already made up their mind that they NEED faith in something supernatural to sleep at night. And you damn sure won't convert anyone who won't mind their own business into someone who will live and let live. So, frustration is all that results.

Read the answers to your question and it should be easy to see why some of us get pretty caustic. Personally I've only asked one religious question. But have seen plenty of questioners roundly damned, more so by Christians than others.

I also resent people quoting or referring to biblical passages when answering. Can't the ever give an a response that is original. Why do they use the quotes as if they had been brain washed?

I don't even mind invective if it intelligent, witty or mote to the discussion. You really have to let your fingers do the walking to find questions that interest you, and take your chances.

For one, this is not a discussion forum, this is a place where questions are posed and if our answers are not what the asker wants then he/she doesn't have to pick them. Whats neat is that the asker has to read our answers to find one that fits, or delete the whole premise. I have read some wonderfully articulate answers that seem to be exactly the right answer and don't care if the asker picks mine or them, I have been filled. Should I object because trash exists? Perhaps you could rise up and ignore the gradeschoolers answers too?

I agree, it is hard to sort through all the "trash" on this site, but every once in awhile there's a gem worth some real thought. Of course in the meantime I do find myself getting distracted and pulled in by the less...thoughtful...questions, and I think because I'm an atheist I usually find myself angered most by fellow atheists who, to be of a group that claims to do a lot of rational thinking, can't seem to produce much of it on here!

I was raised Catholic too, I ask things because I want to know how it is justified in others minds not to insult them. I also like to pose logic questions to either the whole group or a particular religion.
In my quest to understand and respect others it helps me to here the more sane and well thought out response from those especially I do not agree with.
In the case of my Rapture questions, I was hoping to prove to myself nice Christian folks would not self fulfill prophecy if it meant all of our meaningless deaths. Well that backfired and I learned their are some crazy folks out their....no matter the Faith.

Read the second book of Timothy chapter 3 verses 1 through 9.
These people are corrupt and will not be able to hide themselves from the truth forever.

This is a particularly hot place for such rude discourse. Has to do with intolerance, I suspect. Atheists are stuck in logic and religious people are stuck in spirituality. Fortunately, for me, there's room in my mind for opinions on both sides... particularly creation verses evolution. Just think, if God hadn't created evolution, there wouldn't be any disagreement. Obviously, He has a great sense of humor as He watches us banter away over an unresolvable issue. Makes me laugh.

Christians should remember one thing, Jesus said do not judge your brothers, or you too shall be judged. Do not fight evil with evil, but evil with good. Remember this as you post here. If people are bitter to you for your religion, remember Jesus said that those who follow him will be judged and mocked.

It's a real shame to see so many people bashing on other people for their beliefs. You bring up a great valid point.

because people want to be judgemental....in being judgemental, it adds worth to their beliefs because obviously without all that criticism, their religion means nothing. I am one of those who LOVES to hear about others religions..ask them why (without a discerning eye) they believe this or that and so on and want the knowledge of other religions. I think that having an understanding of all religions allows you to keep an open mind, not only about religion, but on life itself. You also understand the good and the bad of any religion cause every religion has it.

I've always thought that if you truly believed in your religion and had faith in it, you wouldn't have to put other religions down....it's the same concept as "you put others down to feel better about yourself......i don't like myself so let me insult this person, demean them so that I can feel some worth". so goes the same for religion "let me put this religion down so that I can feel better about mine or I don't like my religion or I question it so let me demean this other religion so that I can have faith in mine again and believe it has worth" As you can see, I have more problem with people than with religion.

My only problem with religions is their past and it makes people crazy and judgemental. I believe in spiritualism and don't need an organized religion for that. But I also understand people's need for religion. People need something that helps them understand and what they don't understand they leave up to god's hands, which is actually great because at least you won't rack your brain over something that might not have an explanation for. Some people need religion in order to believe in god. Some people need religion in order to maintain morals and values..... cause I know some people, if they didn't have religion, they'd be a mess, those people seriously need religion (of course I'm being sarcastic.....okay maybe there's some truth in that :P). Some people need it some people don't, but who are we to judge? Just because I don't need it doesn't mean that someone else doesn't. And then there's those people who don't need religion but follow one anyway...and that's awesome!!! I wish I were like that! but for now I'll remain agnostic and spiritualistic.

They want to insult others! There are a lot of insulting people out there and they love to come to this site and put people down because they feel bad about themselves and are trying to make themselves feel better that way.

I want everyone that reads this to know ---- God loves each and every one of us! God is a good God and the devil is a bad devil. It is the devil who is killing and doing all of the bad things to people. He has his followers just like Jesus has His followers. We are at WAR people -- it is Good against Evil! Read the back of the book --- God WINS! Who are you following?
