OK ppl! My sister has gotten a cat recently. We share the same appartment. The kitty is loveable, but I have a very sensitive nose and that kitty seems to smell really bad, more than cats usually do. In fact, the whole appartment smells like cat and I cannot stand it any more. Any suggestions pls?

Get some Febreeze. It works wonders. Also You might try to get a cat litter with an odor control in it. Or if the smell is coming from the cat itself you might want to take it to the vet and make sure it's healthy, no worms, uptodate on shots ect...

If you are talking about the cat's excrement that is normal. Yours and mine smells too and we have a great system for getting rid of the smells. The cat only has the box and you must keep it scrupulously clean if you don't want any odor. If you feed a diet high in corn (the first two ingredients on the bag label) it can cause bad litterbox odor as the corn isn't digested well.

If the cat's body smells, that is a different story and something you might need to look into with a vet. Cats are very diligent in their hygiene and my cats have no body odor. They do go out in the garden and sometimes smell dusty.

Did you wash the cat? Sometimes if they have been at a shelter or stray, they need a bath. Not just grooming they do themselves.
Get an air freshener like Fabrieze or Oust. Get the little fans that you plug in to the wall for continuous freshness.
Baking Soda like you put in the refrigerator works like a charm. Get one of those fridge packs that you can open the sides without any spilling and put them all over. Near the litter box of course, but in each room too.
There are litter additives you can use. At pet stores.
Also, carpet and room deodorizing sprinkles for when you vacuum.
Get used to it or evict the cat. LOL

You don't say if the cat is male or female,or whether it's fixed or not.If it's a male, and is going to be an "inside"cat,it needs to be neutered,or it will "spray" in the house and the smell will only get worse, because he will keep doing it in the same spot over and over(his way of marking his territory).Other than that, the litter pan needs to be cleaned at least twice a day,and make sure it's at least 1/2 full of litter.(You may also consider buying the "fragrant"litter varieties.)

DId you talk to your sister about this? She is your sister...I'm sure she'll understand. If not, it seems like maybe there are underlying issues between the two of you....she's aware of your sensitivity to smells and she gets a cat and then it smells bad but she doesn't do anything about it, and then there's your reluctance to talk directly to her as most sisters would try before coming into this site and asking complete strangers...hmm.

Good luck though. Google, google, google....

is it the cat you are smelling or is it the pan? Is the pan scooped out every day? Can you ask your sister to locate the cat pan in more of a space that is 'her space' so it would be less offensive and to keep the waste scooped out? Hope this helps
