I recently moved into my girlfriends parents house.Id never realize it before but her family is very racist. They are constantly talking bad about other races that arent white and saying ****** and other racist words. Not only do I not want to lose her by confronting her family im also a very easy going person and have a hard time with confrontation.ive been here with her for almost 5 months and ive actually found myself throwing around racist words casually ina conversation and finding the racist jokes they tell funny.should i just keep doing what im doing since i only talk like that in private or should i confont them?

"No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." Voltaire.
Don't try to justify this behavior by saying "I'm just saying these things when I'm at home." It's still wrong. It's a shame that you're such a passive person. It's no excuse to tolerate and join in with any of the things you're talking about though. If she isn't racist then I doubt she'd have a problem with you standing up for what you believe in. That is if you aren't racist yourself. Something needs to be done. If you can't just move out, then you need to make it clear to the people in the house that you won't tolerate that kind of talk or metality. That may be a bit too extreme so at the very least don't join in or add to it. Let it be known you don't approve of it in a more subtle way. And if you want to continue being a puss or if you agree with them: Then welcome to your new life as a bigot.

You are a racist your self too by saying (even at home) what you are saying and laughing at the racist jokes. How can you talk about them doing it when are too? I don't care if I am around someone talking like that, I won't do it. It is being very disrespectfully to the other race out there.Just because they do it, don't mean you have to!

I guess if her whole family was to start jumping off a bridge, you would too.

Be a better person than they are, don't be a racist at all. Let your girlfriend know how you feel about it and tell her you don't want any part of being a racist and then don't be one!!!!!!

I think you should avoid living in the house as much as possible, since I don't think it would be wise or reasonable to confront them and get them to change. Is your girlfriend as offensive when it comes to race? If so, ask her if she would consider questioning her personal beliefs about race. I don't think being influenced by such racist ideology is a good thing.

my parents use to be like that till we had kids and saw he was a very good man and started to meet some of his friends weve been together for 14 years and it changed alot of the people in my family to respect other races now they have no racism and his relationship with my family is a 1000 times better than with his own family, just stick it out and try to prove your self dont give up to fast it can turn for the best if they let you in there house there making progress. good luck!

1. be true to yourself
2. 5 months????? and you live there?????
3. it isn't confrontation, it is a matter of comfort. if they respect you, they'll understand (my dad says terrible things about whites, blacks and mexicans........ not around me or my husband (white) or my friends because he knows I won't tolerate such silly things)
4. if you can get over the emotional side, some jokes are funny (and not really race specific, so you can change that part and it's just as silly)............. tho if I were you, I'd not help perpetuate the hate anymore...... just stop telling those jokes

You should have spoken up some time before. If you were really against racism you wouldn't have egged them on and encouraged them to keep doing their actions by saying racist things back and laughing at their stupid *** jokes. Either be for the racism or against you can't have it both ways.
