His bum will smell for days and then it's fine for a while. Sometimes when he's startled he farts or something and it smells but that's not always the case. Sometimes he just smells. He's 3 by the way.

A veterinary exam would be wise.
If you feed him a lot of canned food, his feces would be more 'pungent" than with dry, which is also much better for his teeth. If his feces is not solid, some of it may be left behind (sorry) and causing the odor. Especially if he's a long hair.
He may very well have gastro-intestinal issues, and since you mention sometimes he just smells, there may be other problems at work here.
Have your vet check him out soon.

Our male cats bum smells sometimes, and we just use unscented baby wipes on him!

You should try giving your cat a bath, wit some cat shampoo like maybe once a week, if it still continues, you should probably go to vet and get him checked out.

Well maybe he is not good at using the bathroom and he is messy. If you really can't stand it put gloves on and take a paper towel and wipe his butt. It will clean him up and will help him from getting unwanted parasites.

It's an animal. It's butt will stink! make sure you control its diet, but with cats that is not always possible (they are such good instinctive hunters). Don't smell your cat's butt!

I would keep air fresheners handy. When your cat smells, spray it with perfume or hairspray.

Well, it IS a "butt", it's not going to smell terriffic considering it's function and all. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but ya know....butts stink.

I guess you can wash it, using pet shampoo, water and an old cloth. I'm not so sure if you'd have hands left if your cat is like mine--mmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooooowwwwwww, hiss, hisss, hisss.
