According to catholic doctrine, it was before God created man. Because if you think about it, Eve couldn't have been tempted if he wasn't already cast out. I don't think it was the beginning of time, probably a little while after before humans came around.

Basically you make up whatever you wish, because the Bible is just a man-made play script, with several actors God, Devil, Jesus, Satan, Adam, Eve etc, and of course some intriguing imaginary places like Heaven, Hell, Purgatory and Limbo.

I certainly don’t believe in the Bible and I doubt any reasonably intelligent person would either. However, if you view the Bible as a man-made play script, with several actors God, Devil, Jesus, Satan, Adam, Eve, Noah, and so on, then you can certainly start to see a clever interwoven plot, that the audience is unaware of. It’s really just a drama thriller with clever twists.

You see, if you seriously think about it in an unbiased manner, then clearly the actor God in the Bible could really be the Devil, and the audience (religious believers) are being sucked into being the bad guys, who then use religion to get everyone fighting each other.

On the other hand, the more intelligent audience (Atheists) spot the plot and try their best to teach believers that this is just nonsense, stop getting sucked in.

The Bible is really just a fake story, perhaps a bit like the Loch Ness monster tales.

When we pass on information to another (example: story, joke, description of something etc) by the time these details are passed on by word of mouth, interpreted by others, and then written down, the final details are typically quite different than the original information.

Since the Bible is just a man-made story passed down over many years in various forms, the chance of it being accurate in any shape or form is remote.

There are people who swear blind that the Loch Ness monster exists regardless of all the evidence to the contrary, but a fence post bobbing up and down in the Loch does the trick. Similarly there are people who swear blind that God exists and the Bible is fact, yet there isn’t one blind bit of evidence to support such theories.

Biblical tales are really no different than Loch Ness monster tales, just the era is different.

One thing all the false religions (be it Wicca, Hinduism, or even the pseudo-Christian groups like Unity, and Mormonism) have in common is a great and singular lie that their beliefs are based on. This falsehood has been the essential basis upon which spiritual deception has sought to ensnare the unwary with throughout history. This lie led man into rebellion against the revealed will of God in the Garden of Eden, as the Genesis account reveals. This rebellion became literally the first sinful act of mankind. And it was patterned after Satan's own presumptuous rebellion against his Creator, the first known defiance of God's will. What was this very first sin? Satan thought he could be God. This got him kicked out of heaven. What did Satan use to get Eve to eat from that tree in the garden? The same lie. He told her that she would not die, and that she would become like God:

He wasn't. He is still in Heaven, and will be kicked out at the end of time. See this all makes more sense if you read about Revelation. If you read the book itself it proably wouldn't but I was reading this book that was written to put it in better terms. Can't remember the book I think it was something like Revelation unvieled or something. Anyway at the end it is pointed out that Heaven will be destroyed and a new one created, that is because Heaven will be polluted. In the final battle when all the souls are there the Devil will lead the ones that are on his side and he will be polluting Heaven. I have yet to see the verse in the Bible that tell the story of him being kicked out of heaven and sent to Hell, other then Revelation pointing out in the end he will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.

God expelled Satan from heaven when Satan began to think he was as powerful as God. He was at one time, one of the most beautiful Angels, and God's favorite. But Satan had jealousy in his heart, so God expelled him. It was before Adam and Eve, because Satan was the one, as a serpent tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

The timing isn't specific, and I'm not sure it really matters WHEN it happened.

Isaiah 14:11-13

All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,
along with the noise of your harps;
maggots are spread out beneath you
and worms cover you.

How you have fallen from heaven,
O morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!

You said in your heart,
"I will ascend to heaven;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.

Ezekiel 28:12-14

"Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
" 'You were the model of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

You were in Eden,
the garden of God;
every precious stone adorned you:
ruby, topaz and emerald,
chrysolite, onyx and jasper,
sapphire, turquoise and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared.

You were anointed as a guardian cherub,
for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.'"

Apparently it happened before Job was born, as he is an accuser in this book and comes into the presence of the Lord. FYI--Job was the first book written in the Bible.

Job 1:6

One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"

Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

"Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger."

Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

BRENDAS WORLD:
How did over 40 writers come up with a unified story over the course of 1600 years in several different languages with so much cohesion and with so many themes? How did they come up with a "man-made play script, with several actors God, Devil, Jesus, Satan, Adam, Eve, Noah" without collaborating with each other? And why would they do it?

It's hard enough to get a rock group to stay together because of creative differences. If the Bible wasn't inspired by God, it never would have survived 100 years, much less 1600.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Lucifer left heaven after a dispute with God about who exactly should be running things :) He got a little above himself. Anyway, he is still the 'bringer of light' because without the knowledge of good and evil there is no freedom of choice. So really Lucifer/Devil is still working for God...
:)

Wow, in Brenda's World atheism is a very serious endeavour. Interesting perspective.

this was not an opportunity to ridicule your beliefs. The devil asked a question why cannot people worship me the lord said gather your followers and cast him to earth. So when people say why does god let this happen this is the time of the devil and he will recruit however he can through death if necessary.

It was before the Creation of the Garden of Eden, Man and Eve when the world was still a formless wasteland.
