he died for our sins

Jesus was apart of God. God sent Jesus as a living sacrafice for our sins. Jesus is God's son. If God didn't send His only son, then everyone would have been lost, and dead. I think that you should thank Him for doing that. Because even if you were the only person on Earth, He would have still died for you. No matter how much you hate Him. That's just how much He love you.

Do you like your children? Would you send your children to be tortured and killed? This question is awful. God had only one begotten son. He loved you and everyone else enough that He sent Him to die for all our sins.

The Father in heaven sent His only Son to be tortured and die for our sins.

God sent Jesus to die for our sins because God loved us so much that He willingly gave His Son up as a ransom for us all.

Each of us need to respond to this, by asking for forgiveness of all our wrong doing. Turn away from sin, and ask God to take possession of our will and our life over to Him.

I tend towards the second explanation, since it was God who established the punishment for sin. So he sure could find a better way so save people, and this whole suffering and sacrifice thing is basically a PR stunt (and a pretty effective one).

Kinda like this Egyptian plagues thing - God hardens the heart of the pharaoh, pharaoh won't let Jews go, God sends plague, pharaoh agrees to let Jews go, God hardens his heart again, etc.
All to show Jews that God's not kidding here.

We gotta say "Sorry" if we owe anything, & we do owe God.
One reason Jesus is called the Son of God is because that helps us understand how close a part of God Jesus is..... The only persons who can't understand this are the ones who have not been fully loved by their parents....."God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son...(that whoso believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.)"..... He gave of Himself that which was dearest to Him.....AND Jesus taught us that, " I and the Father are are One. Noone comes to the Father but through me." ..... STILL, we have to know that we are but "filthy rags" and cannot stand in God's presence without an attonement ,i.e., someone to pay for our debts (shortcomings owed to man and God.) .......
Jesus was obedient unto death (just as Abraham's son, Isaac, had been) because in a perfect plan this was the only WAY to reconcile an imperfect man to a perfect God. ......Jesus Christ's crucifixion was fortold by Isaiah, the prophet (was it 2000yrs. BC?); and the great "I AM" -was, is, and shall be- was the awesome CREATOR of perfection.......He couldn't dislike Jesus (The Christ)........Christ's reward is OUR souls......!!!

Word of mouth, be careful. It is that you really don't want God to prove Himself to you? Just ask Him to...because pride Goes before a fall, a haughty look before destruction. Just it is that God is not mocked, and to think he loved you, yes YOU, enough to send his son to die for your sins. Ask your questions...He will answer you. It takes faith to believe in an unseen God, who loves you even though you mock Him. It takes faith to realize, that someone hurt you, you have no belief in anyone but yourself. Ok, when you fail yourself, when your friends and family walk away from you, who will you turn to? God is not a sugar daddy God to only turn to in times of trouble...he is...it is as simple and as complex as that. Stop holding on to your anger, you unforgiveness, you self hatred. All in the name of what you call reality. God is real...very real.

False premise: both of your options require a belief in God.

How about jesus was a wise man who undertsood the value of Love and taught it to those who would listen. A century or so later, his message was in part corrupted and in part adopted by those who saw a power structure they could bend to their will.

God needn't enter this at all.

He died for our sins but he could have made things very easy for himself just by making us better beings in general!
