Very interesting matchup between some really skilled boxers! I remember watching Buchanan defeat Laguna which was a big upset at the time. I believe Whitaker was a little more elusive than Laguna and would land a few more punches defeating Laguna by decision. Very good question!

Whitaker - W 40 (KO's 17) TF 46 - W pct 87% - KO pct 37% - wins over R. Mayweather, "Buddy" Mcgirt{2}, Chavez and A.Nelson - KO'ed by none (Even more impressive considering he fought Del LaHoya, Trinidad and Chavez) - 10th greatest fighter of all-time - Champion in 3 different wt div.
Some of his fights were boring because of his great defensive skills.
Laguna - W 65 (KO's 37) TF 75 - W pct 87% - KO pct 49% - wins over C. Ortiz, M. Ramos and E.Espinoza - KO'ed by none (always an impressive stat)
Laguna had more experience and Whitaker had more speed. A fight between a good fighter (Laguna) and a great fighter (Whitaker).
Whitaker by a unanimous decision.

in his prime whitaker was unbeatable, i went to high school with him and i followed his career very closely. he was the first fighter to unify the lightweight crown since roberto duran, and he effortlessly won titles in 4 different weight classes. i don't follow boxing anymore, so i honestly don't know who laguna is, but i doubt his resume' is as impressive
